Thinking about watching GOT

I've never watched it, but have been told that there is a cutoff point, and that at the very least, I shouldn't watch season 8. What should I consider the finale if I want to enjoy it from beginning to end?

Just watch the entire series and understand it falls off at the end. It's worth an entire watch thru

If you're going to do it, do it all the way.
Yeah the ending is a let down, but you're already 90% there.

Even with the flawed ending GOT is one of the best Made for TV shows ever. You should watch it and make your own opinion.
My wife and I are one of those irate fans that didn't like the ending...With that said, we recently re-watched the entire series again and it wasn't as bad as we first felt.
The problem with fandom is sometimes people get so invested in characters that their passions get the better of them when that character doesn't live up to the pedestal you have placed them.
If you watch it I recommend watching all 8 seasons.
My best advice is re-watch the first the first 2 seasons twice to you can really understand all of the different families, characters, factions and the Map of "Westeros" so you can really understand what's going on. In fact I would print a map to have with you as you watch the show.
You will like it.

Watch it all the way through.
The earlier seasons were fantastic TV and a shitty 8th season doesn't change that IMO. Just be prepared for the fall off.

If you're going to take the time to watch a series then you should finish it. There's no point in watching stories develop only to abandon before they are resolved. Either watch till the end or move on to other things.
The last episode of the series. I don't really understand what you are trying to do here.

I just started watching last month. it's good but its a lot to soak in and to have to understand if you're not completely paying attention.
I decided to stick with it bc my wife has read the books. So I figured I don't have to always be zoned in and can just ask her what's going on when I get lost or distracted.

I don’t ever get emotionally tied to television characters but with that said, Ramsey Bolton and Joffrey are 2 of a very minimal amount of characters that I legit hated so much it made me angry.
It’s well worth the watch.

If you do, watch until the end of Season 6 and then imagine the ending from there. Seriously, I have not heard a single fan theory worse than the ending we got. Whatever you imagine will be better. It’s not like LOST where people who hated the ending say to themselves “well in the very least the characters with one or two exceptions all ended up where they needed to be and the character development was pretty solid throughout.” No, you’re betrayed by every single character at the end with the possible exceptions of Brienne and the Hound.

Watch it all.
If the rest of us had to experience season 8, why shouldn't you?

Just watch the whole thing. It is probably not as bad for someone who waited years for a single season to come out or anticipated a new episode weekly while a season was happening.
Basically, the last couple of seasons smashes another 4 or so seasons worth of material together in a way that bypasses significant characterization and plot points.
Not as bad as some insist but definitely not worthy of the earlier seasons.

Watch as long as you're still interested?
It's not like Dexter or Mad Men, where there were earlier season finales that could have served as series finales. Nothing is resolved in GoT at the point where most of us think it went sideways.

Watch the first 6 seasons, then wait 10-15 years until the final 2 books come out.

I'll go against the grain and give a specific stopping point. I'd say watch through season 8, episode 4. Actually, only the first part of that episode is worth the watch, but quitting in the middle of an episode is maybe carrying things a bit too far.
I don't think I could bring myself to re-watch the last two episodes. Everything before that had some quality and appeal for me (except that one Dorne episode, but no use skipping at that point). The last two episodes, though, I just can't find anything that would make me want to watch them again.

OP don’t listen to these trolls wanting to torture you by suggesting you watch the whole series. At the very least, if you watch season 8 you will regret ever starting the show. Trust me, you don’t see anyone on here starting threads to do a re-watch like they do other highly regarded shows

What kind of a viewer are you?
If you are more analytical and get annoyed with sloppy writing the last two seasons will make you unhappy. If you are a popcorn "it's just a television show" type viewer you may enjoy most of it all the way through.
The first four seasons are brilliant as long as neither violence nor sex offend you. The story and characters degrade a lot once they get past the books Martin finished.

You won't be able to stop at a certain point... even knowing the last season kinda sucks.

Familiarize yourself with the 7 Kingdoms and the Iron Islands.
Example-The Tyrells rule the Reach and their castle is called Highgarden.
Doing that will help you understand things going on in the first couple of seasons. There's a lot of discussion about the ruling Kingdoms before you see/meet them.
Seasons 1-4....A+
Seasons 5-7....B-
Season 8.....C-
The Battle of Winterfell is Season 8's saving grace. I thought it was very well done.

Really needed another 2 seasons to really wrap everything up. Final season was crammed into 6 episodes. Not enough to wrap up an epic show like that.
