I’m not too worried about the bats yet, but I can see how it can get sideways pretty quick if we don’t get what we need from people like Doughty and Beloso. I’m more worried about the defense at this point.

And this place would have been nuked if we struck out 45 times like they did. That’s not a misprint is it?

It's not. But, in defense of some of their hitters and some of ours, extra innings increase strikeouts at a higher rate and pinch hitters strike out at a higher clip than everyone else.

one was a long hop that wasn’t that tough to handle

Short hops are MUCH easier to handle than long hops at ~+80 mph.

You think catching a ball at 80 +that is 8 feet from the bag is easier than one 6 feet from the bag? A short hop can be picked by a good pony league player at that speed...long hop not so much.

Yes, especially if the long hop isn’t on turf.

Pretty sure every guy who has ever played first base will tell you this.

I think Bianco or Dugas should get the first crack because they are the more experienced players. But, they should be on a short leash and if they don't perform well over a few weeks, the younger guys should see some innings.

I also wouldn't mind seeing Arnold shift to 3rd and play Cranford at SS.

I'm looking forward to everyone's reaction to today's lineup as much as anything. Literally, nobody has a clue what PM is going to do. Crews may be at 3B today for all we know.

Depends what short hop

The one between a long hop & an extreme short hop is the hardest

The bang-bang short hop is rather easy

I always found the extreme short hops to be the easiest. High school guys sometimes bail out on the long ones.

You can play two sports. You couldn’t if studying were required. I am a huge fan season football tickets for 43 years. How many good players have ever been kicked off for academic purposes. The tail is wagging the dog at most successful athletic programs. With correspondence courses not available you don’t even have to see the campus classrooms. Manziel had no campus classes his senior year. This is not to say there aren’t good student athletes. Many choose not to be and after not making it in the pros sometimes regret not getting a degree. Still absolutely love it and watch every game. But to call these guys amateurs is a big joke.

The problem was that Morgan stretched too far and turned, what should have been a long hop, into an "in-between" hop. The error was on the 3B for sure, but Morgan didn't play that ball correctly. He should read the trajectory and position his body (either by stretching or by sitting back) in a way that allows for a long hop or a short hop (but not an in-between hop as those are the hardest to field).

Correct. He stretched too early several times, and almost handcuffed himself on just routine pitch and catch. If you stretch too early on throws in the dirt, you can't pick your hop. Pick through the short ones, give on the long ones. 1000% throwing error, though.

Glad to see people who know the game chiming in here.

We have guys in here dissing long hops and, as an example, I point out there is a MLB Hall of Fame SS who *purposefully* threw the ball in the grass in order to create long hops to 1B, and those same guys shitting on it and downvoting.

Yes, I like Hellmers, but not at the expense of the team.

I like Morgan, A. LOT.

I was questioned about Morgan at OF, and thankfully someone else here appears to have seen him at OF (and just as importantly, noted he was NOT a 1B).

I'm arguing for a better use of the talent CPM has - both are true FR and we have holes to fill that older players aren't getting filled.

That being the case, put the stud, experienced OF at OF and the stud, experienced 1B at 1B and I promise you'll see better play.
