Probably the most proud I’ve been of fixing shite at my house was when I unclogged my main sewer line. Had sewage backing up into the house and went to Lowe’s and bought a few things to figure it out and one of them worked. I come from a family that paid to have problems taken care of. After saving myself $200-300, you couldn’t wipe the grin off of my cheap arse face.

The downvotes are astounding because you know everyone who downvoted shared a Mike Rowe Facebook meme at some point.
Also lol’d yesterday at a thread discussing power outages. Post after post bitching and pointing fingers. One knowledgeable poster discusses in great detail the decision making structure behind the outages. Zero replies. Ignored him and kept yelling at the sky.

Six figures for a plumber is not uncommon at all.

Yeah.. Maybe he should have went to college and got a liberal arts degree before getting a real trade.
Seriously, you sound mad because you had to pay him $350... for 30 mins of work.. But when you can do something people don't know how to do or not willing to do on their own, you get to charge $350 for 30 mins of work.

First pipes were made from lead. "Plumb" comes from the Latin word for lead. That's also why the chemical symbol is Pb. And a plumb bob is called that because originally it was a piece of lead on a string.
Yup. Plumbum. Really cool etymology

Those guys professions are going to be in such high demand within a decade you’ll be begging for someone to come work on your shite.
Unless my child were truly gifted and could excel in a STEM field, there is absolutely no way I'd steer them in any direction other than a trade.
shite, even if they were gifted and COULD excel in a STEM field, if their demeanor suited the trades better, I'd steer them that direction.
Someone's going to have to overcharge the soy boys to fix simple shite and satisfy their women. You think these three buttplugs know anything about fixing simple shite around a house?

I’m a plumber apprentice and I’ve spend easily $500 on my tool bag/hand tools not even counting my battery powered tools.
$500 wouldn't cover what I have in the middle red tool tote.
This is just the stuff I've gotten out for some calls I know will be coming this weekend. Pipe threader and bigger stuff is still in my shop.

I just scratched out a check for literally tree-fiddy to repair a pipe in my ceiling. About 30 mins work.
If they are good they can do work that will last a very very long time, and that is worth a lot to me.
What chaps my arse is shitty work performed by professionals that doesn't hold up.

There is a shortage of people going into trades and most of the ones that are have no work ethic. My son started as a plumbers helper right out of high school. Showed his boss early on he knew how to show up to work on time, pay attention and get shite done. Boss man is now paying for his apprenticeship and in a year when he gets his journeyman will bump his pay to $25/hr and buy him his own new truck and hire him a helper. He will be just shy of 22 with no college debt.

That's more often than not these days. It would take something like major concrete or roofing work before I call somebody else.
This work was done by "professionals" that I get to redo for a friend.
Ignore the badly kinked feed line to the insta-hot and the double p-trap drain for the disposal for the moment and trace the white poly lines to the water filter...

I don't envy a plumbers job. If you do then go ahead and do it yourself.
I hate everything regarding plumbing when I try to do it myself.

Plumbing is a disgusting job. And how would you like to be working in water in freezing weather? If he can learn the trade, you probably could too and save your 350.
Show us where the plumber touched you...

It seems so simple but I always have to make two or three trips to the hardware store to get the simplest plumbing job done it seems.
This here. Just changing out the wax ring can turn into a real PITA. If all goes well it can be done in an hour...but my last one didn't go so well. I go to the store, get the ring and kit to replace gaskets on tank (easier to remove the tank when replacing the ring). Of course first problem is one of the bolts to the floor is free spinning. That takes an hour to take care of. After that, the bolt is ruined so it's back to the store for new bolts. Then the water line attachment to the tank leaks a bit so its a couple of hours adjusting and rechecking every 5 to 10 mins. Can't just endlessly tighten down on the plastic fittings either.
