Large SUV Preference

I’m thinking it is time for a new car and am looking at getting a used SUV. I like the Tahoes but don’t want to pay that much. You get get a Lexus GX460 for the same or less or an Armada for far less.
If you were in the market what would you get? Anybody have any of the above models and love it or have any regrets? Or any others in a similar class that you’d recommend I look at?

I've got 3 kids and they always have tons of shite to lug around and we take a lot of road trips.
I just got an Expedition Max limited.
I love it.

no joke, two of the hottest large SUVs on the market, Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade
people are paying over MSRP for these models right now

I like the GX, but if you're considering it for the 3rd row, just know it's not a very functional 3rd row for everyday use, and it eats up almost all of the cargo space.

Have a yukon. Love it. The camera system in insane.

But the GX isn't a "large" SUV.
I wouldn't waste time with the short wheelbase full size SUVs. The Suburban/Yukon XL, Expedition Max etc provide much more cargo room with the 3rd row up with basically no change in driving dynamics. Only issue is if you were planning to garage it and your garage is small.
If you are worried about cost and need to move maximum people and cargo, a minivan is your answer if you aren't bothered by the internet making fun of you.

rented a Suburban last week. That thing was incredible.
I owned a Yukon XL and put nearly 300K miles on it without any repairs. The 5.3L V8 is solid

The GX is an obvious choice other than the 10 year old interior and the ugly back end. Lexus/Toyota are just so slow in making updates to these models that still sell, and it's really annoying. If you're going to go back a few years a GX is fine IMO. I've thought about going and buying a 2016 or something to drive for a year or two. It'd still be pretty outdated, but there is no way I'd buy a used/slightly used one because once that update hits those things are going to be dinosaurs.
I've shite on Tahoes for a while as incredibly overpriced for the quality, but the new Tahoe is appealing. The interior looks a little classier and less cheap/gaudy. When COVID is over and we get around to getting a new SUV I'll test drive the High Country.

The new Tahoes are pretty awesome. I think the rig with the diesel is a great vehicle.
But they are "new" and there is a serious supply constraint, so their prices are going to be atrocious for a while.

The front end is the problem IMO.
And the lack of car play, android auto, etc. It's just not getting the updates the other Toyotas are getting. I think the model is about to be canceled.

I love the Tahoes and Suburbans - but I agree, they are too much.
We test drove the Kia thing, Toyota Highlander, and Honda Pilot - too small for us - although I liked the Highlander a lot more than I thought.
We bought a Chevrolet Traverse - then a few weeks later my good friend and my sister also bought a Traverse.
They aren’t anything special, but I like it.
We had a Dodge Durango for 11 years - so it was an upgrade, except my husband complains about the front wheel drive.

The new ones are awesome.
And you are right. The full sized GMC/Chevy SUVs are incredible if you keep up with maintenance. People who buy them tend to own them for a long time.

I really hope not but you could be right. I know it has a lot of "competitors" but I don't think it really has any comparables - new JGC maybe? That's a stretch obviously.

Lexus GX is considerably smaller than the Tahoe and Yukon. The full sized competitor from Toyota would be the Sequioa.
IMO the GMC Yukon is the one to buy. It's a great truck that will last if it's not abused. It looks great. And they have the best resale value in their segment.
Their prices are terrible right now though.

GX actually has less interior space than the 4Runner.
Armada is a great value for what you get.

Only thing I don't like about the GX is the outward swinging rear hatch door. I have a hitch and haul and a bike rack that goes in the receiving hitch and that door seems like it would be problematic.
I can live with everything else being outdated.

I actually like the swinging back door. I miss the old Suburbans with the Dutch doors/barn doors.
