Do you own chopsticks that you bring to Japanese/Vietnamese/Thai restaurants?

We have some that we keep at home but never thought to bring them out to a restaurant. We had dinner last night at a sushi restaurant and a couple next to us brought their on chopsticks that they took out of a wooden box.
They looked expensive..... and bringing your own is probably a good idea during these times..

This might be the most pretentious thing I have ever heard.

Why judge?
Maybe they are pretentious, or maybe they belonged to his father passed away from cancer last week.

No, i also don't bring my own silverware to restaurants either. That's just strange.

Why? Even if you are a masked covidian, chopsticks are usually pre-wrapped. If you are worried about the utensils, then you should definitely be worried about the food being prepared and sent to you.

I don't use chopsticks w/ sushi, I pick it up with my fingers.

We've spent some time in Japan, and each have a pair of custom chopsticks, but they are for in-home use only. I can't imagine taking them out to a restaurant, that would be weird.

Actually this is kind of an interesting situation. Most American restaurants have reusable silverware. If you go to a nice place, they usually have a good knife for a steak, soup spoon, etc., so you are getting good utensils to use.
Most Japanese places Just give you the wooden, throwaway ones. I can see people wanting to use a better quality reusable set they can bring.
Would people bring their own utensils to American restaurants if they have you plastic utensils?

No.

Exactly. Could be special to them in some way.
I wouldn't see it as pretentious. I think it's rather neat to have a special set in a wooden box.

Pics or it didn’t happen.

I actually use the cheapy ones like at the grocery store sushi counter way better than the nice ones. I am almost as good on them as I am with regular utensils, but I'm not as good with the nicer/longer disposable ones they use in seated places.
I imagine I'd be bad with the nice reusable ones due to their weight.

I'm picturing a couple of people wearing scarves with short sleeve shirts, black rimmed glasses, and over-groomed mustaches.

As opposed to the individually wrapped wooden ones?

Same here. I can grip the food better with wooden chopsticks. If I go to a place that provides the big plastic ones, I'll request a pair of the takeout sticks.

This seems like something where 99.9% of the time it’s right to judge

I don't own chopsticks. I do own forks though and usually don't bring my own fork to a restaurant either, so I doubt I would bring my own chopsticks if I owned some

I have my own, but don’t take them anywhere. People might expect me to be an expert at using them. I’m not!
I have expanded their usage from just eating utensils to tools when I’m cooking, like turning shrimp over in the sauté pan, etc.

I sat next to a couple at the sushi bar one time who had their own. I struck up a convo with them as they were also wearing leather vests and well they brought their own chopsticks that were in little cases. Their thing was to ride their motorcycle around and go to different sushi restaurants... Probably had one of those 3 wheel bikes with a little trailer on it too. To each their own I guess.

Because you're supposed to use your hands.
