There’s still plenty that are going to hate him regardless. But there’s a growing number that stepped back and saw how much the defense improved.

Personally I think a lot of the rumors stem from this, but I’m wrong on a lot of coaching rumors every cycle.

This take shifts my thinking a bit - I've only seen Bama fans destroy him before, never really defend him.

Look at Aranda's D in 2019. We had to win a shootout vs a Texas team we couldn't stop. Vandy scored 38 on LSU which I think was their high point total for the season. The Ole Miss game was so bad defensively the national media was talking about dropping LSU in rankings behind tOSU and Clemson. Then players got healthy and Aranda got the D going and LSU played like a championship D the rest of the way to complement a historic offense. Aranda didn't forget how to coach D, he needed players healthy and to make adjustments which is what he did.

I don't have strong feelings either way about Golding, but too often fans don't pay attention to all the variables the produce a specific outcome. JHMO

He is not elite. He just has the best players & support staff, plus Saban there. No Thanks.

What about the whole "Saban holds down the defense" talking point?

It's either Saban's defense or it isn't.

MFKING THIS !

rank #1 in america- "saban's defense"
give up 24 ppg- "bad coordinator. not saban's defense"

If I’m Pete, I’d come down to LSU and ask if I can coach the safeties and just take a breather.

Not sure how he would be with safeties, but don't let him coach your linebackers.

I personally don’t dislike Golding either. I have defended him on our board bc the D has improved throughout the year and last year he was dealt a bad hand IMO. He has taken some Kiffin level arse chewings from Saban this year so not sure where Saban stands with him

Nick saban hated lane kiffin, doesn't mean he didn't respect his offensive mind. Bamas defense outside the florida and ole miss game, which are two of the best offenses in the country, was elite. With those two 50 point games included into an all sec 13 game schedule, BAMA still only allowed 19ppg. That's actually really fricking good.

I don't disagree with much of what you said, but:

14 were not on the defense and 7 on our 2nd/3rd string, but carry on this stupid fricking narrative. I am so tired of reading this .

I swear even our own fans don't watch the games.

Ok so they scored 24 on offense. Only Eastern Tennessee State University gave up more than that to Vandy. Feel better?

I’d take him in a second. Overly qualified for the job.

I wouldn’t mind him (thanks for starting the thread by the way because he’s interesting to me), but my hesitation was always that I thought he would only use a 3-4. Is that true? Cause that would rule him out.

Otherwise, I’ve got no bones with him, and I have to imagine he wants to leave Saban by now, which is speculation of course.

Rumors he is will interview for the job... His defensive play calling got better over the year for sure compared to the end of 2018 and all of 2019.

Still not sure on some of his third down defense. Some of the long safety blitzes he continually called are just terrible. Plus he loved the 3 man mush rush.

I think Saban thought he could mold him, that is why he took a chance on him so early in career.

Supposedly amazing at talking X&Os so should ace the interview.

Yea, if you can wow Nick Saban on the white board then chances are you are going to wow anybody in a chalk talk interview.

I think he is better than the fanbase gives him credit for. Saban has mentioned D expectations have changed. You can't have a lock down D and explosive O.

Eh, he's fine. He got too much criticism last year with all the youth and inexperience he was forced to play with, but he's also had some really bad games as a play caller and as the guy in charge of settling the defense down when things go bad. And his ILB coaching just isn't very good.

I'd be happy for him to stick around but I also wouldn't be upset if he left.

So he might be a better DC/Safeties Coach?

I'm not sure what his background was at UTSA, to be honest. I thought it was the secondary but I could be wrong.

Per wiki, cornerbacks at UTSA. DB at Southern Miss and the smaller colleges he started at.

He was either DC, DB or DC/DB coach at his other stops (safety by trade)so I'm guessing he took the ILB coaching position at Bama because the DB coaching spots were already filled.
