He was either DC, DB or DC/DB coach at his other stops (safety by trade)so I'm guessing he took the ILB coaching position at Bama because the DB coaching spots were already filled.

Correct - he took Pruitt's responsibilities.

Wouldn't he have been at UTSA with Bo Davis?

His main background is DB's, but he has been a DC on a few levels. Tusculum D2, Delta State D2, SLU 1-AA, UTSA, D-1, and obviously Bama. The DB coach at Bama is Karl Scott, Pete's boy, who has been with him for over a decade off and on, that is why he coached LB's at Bama. He can coach all positions though.

If he really is interested... Then hire him, but I'd move him back to Safeties.

Hire two great coaches and we are good to go!

So maybe Sark and Bo give Golding a look at Texas.

There are a ton of varying opinions out there on Golding, more bad than good although I’m not sure that the harshest bad opinions are fair. However, one opinion I’ve never heard a single person have is that he is a “great” coach

He is not elite. He just has the best players & support staff, plus Saban there. No Thanks.

LSU has elite talent on the defensive side of the ball.
Plus he would be working for one of the best D-Line coaches ever

Golding Arrives

LSU saw a slip under Aranda...as far as "rankings" go. Believe that's more to do with Offenses than bad coached Defenses....Outside of Bo lol

Opinions of fans, perhaps, which aren't relevant.

I think LSU has the dumbest fans in college sports, but Alabama fans are right there with them.

If they think Golding sucks, then that's a seal of approval to me.

Bama Fan "we gave up 35 points...Defense is horrible."....Offenses scores 60 and wins.....catastrophe syndrome....

Ill take the "W" any week

Well, our 2020 defense was absolutely better than 2019. No doubt about that.

And any defensive coordinator we had on staff would have had some struggles in 2019 given our personnel situation. We started 2 true freshmen ILB in a system that requires complex calls by the ILB on the fly at the LOS. They weren't ready for that. On top of that, we played a bunch of kids on the DL who also were not ready. It was not a good spot for him. However, he clearly had to learn how to communicate the things he knew about the system (which is basically everything) to the kids who had to run it (who basically knew nothing and had no experience). It led to a lot of confusion and a really frustrating season on that side of the ball.

With that said, we started 2020 with some of the same issues (though not as bad), and Golding did a really good job of making changes and simplifications and the defense played very well the last 2/3 of the season. There was visible improvement from individual players and in the overall team defense.

I think Golding has a bright future ahead of him, I'm just not sure he is quite there yet. And I think Saban would admit that Golding was probably a little bit less prepared to take on the large task of being our DC than Saban thought he was back in 2018.

I am in the minority but I think he did a great job this year. We only had two bad outings and the defense got better every week, playing their best against Notre Dame and Ohio State. We were not great but we were good enough and against today's RPO offense, that's ok with me.
