Seems odd that the mom has already setup a scholarship fund for the kids at the school they were going to attend. It's been less than a week since her kids went missing.

I don't enjoy surf fishing because I'm too scared of the sand sharks. While surf fishing in Grand Ilse with my dad he had a couple of specks eaten off his stringer. Since then I'll just fish from the boat.

My dad likes to tell the story about wade fishing in a creek as a boy, and when he pulled up his stringer there was a water moccasin trying to swallow one of the fish.

Now that I'm a dad reading stuff that involves kids losing their lives hits me hard. I can't even imagine.

The sand sharks don’t bother me. This was before I knew what Bull Sharks are.

My Dad made some long stringers out of the old plastic coated steering cable material. With a float so the fish would float away from you.

We were fishing side by side. A Bull came behind me and took my fish by cutting my stringer when he took the fish.

Dad had been in the water longer than me and had a couple of dozen big specks strung. The shark hit his stringer but couldn’t cut the cable stringer. It jerked him around till all that was left was a few heads.

Never use a cable stringer in the surf.

I’d rather die trying to save my kids than live knowing I lost them.

Tragic story, but more than likely complete idiocy from the parents here. Rip currents strong enough to pull adults out are almost always in conditions that kids shouldn't be swimming in.

ETA: Ok it sounds like they weren't swimming but just playing near the water. So my bad, not as dumb now. Still though, waves that big are incredibly strong. Tragic lesson to not screw with the ocean.

I'm not letting my 4 year old swim in this:

People really need to learn that you don’t swim against rip currents. Swim parallel to them until you’re out, or ride it until it stops dragging you out then swim diagonally back to shore away from it

You are 100% correct. Even on the Gulf Coast there seems like a tragic story of someone drowning in a rip especially swimming near the passes (Destin, Orange Beach, etc.).

We were in Galveston one weekend when a 32 year old woman drowned saving her child. The child lived and she didn't.

I'm a big guy and I won't forget being in the water there years ago before kids and weather got rough quick. Before I knew it the waves knocked me on my arse and off my feet in the blink of an eye.

If we go whoever goes in the water has a life jacket.

Makes me wonder how luck me and young relatives (everyone else for that matter) who played in the ocean with no care. Granted we are on the east/gulf coast so not as bad as out west but we always played in the ocean all vacation growing up, but usually had some body boards. Now I just like the beach for some surf fishing but never had any worries about going out waste deep in the water.

Everyone is different. Some people deal with tragedy by getting to work and checking things off the list of shite that has to be done.

Helps their mental state.

Horrible yes. I understand the father's actions though. I would rather drown trying to save my children than live knowing I did not.

One of my biggest fears is one of my kids getting swept up by a current. It’s the reason I don’t enjoy the beach. This is horrible

I make my kids wear a life jacket if the waves are over a foot.
