Been talking about taking one from Jackson to New Orleans for several years, and still haven't done it.

I'll also add that one reason we took the train was to not fool with parking a car when we got to New Orleans. It was cheaper to take the train there and back than to drive plus pay parking fees, considering we were going to be staying by the French Quarter and walking almost everywhere we went.
I think tickets were around $35 each, so a pair of round trips was $140. By the time I put two tanks of gas in my SUV and paid $15/night parking, it was less wear and tear on my vehicle and saved a good bit of money. If you were going to take it one way and fly back that might not matter, but our trip was a weekend getaway and made more sense to just do roundtrip.
A coworker at an old job I had took a massive trip when his wife retired. They took the train from Birmingham to New York, just to see the countryside, then flew from there to Europe. They hit several places there, then took a cruise back across the Atlantic, and took the train back home. I think it was 3 weeks total, with 2 of that being the cruise. They left from Italy, and stopped in a few spots in Spain and France before hitting some islands on the way to the US.

I've taken every route in the US besides the Coast Starlight on the west coast. While I'm a train buff and definitely a little biased, I highly recommend it as a relaxing alternative to flying or driving. Get a roommette; it is worth the experience and not being around the clientele in coach class. It's definitely slow as shite if we're being realistic though.

Thank you sir and thanks to all that took the time to answer my question on Amtrak travel.

Houston is a tough bet because the train comes every other day except certain days, and despite being the fifth biggest city and central to other big Texas and Gulf cities, the train only goes to Nola (east) and San Antonio, Tucson, an LA (westerly).
Also sleeper cars are EXPENSIVE. Otherwise you have to spend the night in an upright coach.
Maybe fly to Tucson and ride back?

I take it from STL to Chicago and STL to KC pretty often. Last week I did RT from Seattle to Portland.
The best is STL to Hermann(wine town)

I checked into it, too expensive, plus, as I learned in India, trains don't always pass thru the best parts of town.

Yep, from Philly to nyc. It was about 1.5 hours and cost me like $19. It was so great. And easy for me to get on a subway from the train.

Goin with my two college-age daughters next week, overnight New Orleans to Chicago. They will share a bedroom, I have a roomette. Looking forward to it; will post next week once it is done.

The food is rough on that train, bring some roast beef po boys and snacks. Also no wifi, so bring a book. There is one plug in each bedroom/roomette so bring a multi-adaptor.

That was a correct statement, until just recently. I was on CNO a couple of months ago, and the dining car was back in full service with much better quality of food than previously. They were serving meals "to go", so you could either stay in dining car or take to room. The salmon was pretty decent. Although the food service on CNO still lags other long-distance Amtrak trains, it's not necessary to bring your own food. And meals are included in ticket price of Amtrak rooms.

I did Philly to DC and back. NOLA to Jackson. Both trips were short and comfortable. The wifi worked so that was a bonus. The first time I took the train I did not get the memo to pack some cocktails. I did not make that mistake again

I live in Greenwood and we kick around the idea sometimes… My hang up is South MS and North La aren’t particularly scenic, and I don’t like being somewhere without a vehicle.

Jackson to NOLA. Worth the price of a ticket.

The wife and I will be taking the Acela from NYC up to Boston in October. I've never been on an Amtrak. Been on plenty of trains in Europe, but not in the states. I figure business class on the Acela would be comfortable enough.

I'm on the Amtrak from NYC to New Haven right now. The trains in the Northeast are good but Amtrak in other parts of the country usually run hours late to your destination.

We wouldn't be traveling by Amtrak outside the Northeast. Running up to Boston by comfortable train seems like a nicer option than messing with airports. I've never been to Boston, looking forward to the trip.

Boston is a great town. Abitafan lives up there and can give you some good tips.
