Where do we draw the line with CFB exhibition games?

This ‘opt out’ nonsense is over the top. The quitting is not because of Covid. Whoever advises these young men to quit seems to have horrible timing.
The overreaction to the King injury last night was not surprising. Didn’t he say he was already coming back? So the Okie State bowl game was meaningless, but the games against Duke and UNC are suddenly important?
Every game is an opportunity for these guys to impress NFL scouts. It’s an opportunity for these guys to enhance a rookie contract. We have offensive lineman quitting for crying out loud.
If a bowl game is meaningless, then so is damn near every other game on the schedule once you are out of contention. You can argue every game on the schedule for 90% of the teams are exhibitions. I’m starting to wonder if these quitters care at all about championships.
Why stop there? JJ Watt and a few other NFLers seem to think this attitude is spreading within the pro ranks. Once they get the check, it’s time to stop going the extra mile. If the Jags start 2-8, why not ‘opt out’ of the last 6 games? I realize NFL GMs won’t make an issue of this until it slaps them in the face, but it seems like we are inching closer to that happening.

The opt out is only for this year and look, this has been a screwed up year. There was a point, close to the beginning of the season, when no one knew if anyone would play or when they would start playing.
The PAC12 & Big10 decided at first to not play. The SEC decided to play a 10 game all SEC schedule starting in October. A lot of teams had their Spring practice cut short. So I don't think you can take what happens this year and compare it to normal seasons in the future.
I will say this. CFB needs to restructure its bowl season, but everyone else does whats in their best interest.. Do you expect the players to not do so as well?

Who ever said college football is only for players to get exposure to NFL scouts? What’s wrong with competing to win for your team mates, coaches, school? What about your own personal pride and satisfaction? Don’t these guys enjoy playing football and having fun?

I get the feeling a good portion don’t enjoy it, it’s more like a job.

And thus the ultimate irony in life, many of those that would give their left arm to play the game at a high level were born with no talent. And many of those born with a world of talent only play because they are good at it and they hope someone will pay them for it.

Why are people getting on the players for sitting out a bowl game when I hear tons of fans calling these games meaningless?

The bowls should switch their games to the opening weekend of college football. Base your selections on perceived strength and conference tie ins. Leave the playoffs for the end of the year. The current system is toast.

I'm sorry but the school gave you a scholarship to play.
The contract was you get a free education but you have to play football - like a tuition aid that requires you to have an on campus job.
Opt out? Sure...the school can opt-out on giving you a diploma.
Players are acting like they're not in breach and once the scholie is accepted playing is optional.

I haven't heard an idea this good in a while. Take results from previous year and seed the opening non conference game. It would make more money than the bowls probably.

Diploma, hell. Most of these players don't bother with finishing school and getting a degree.
Scholarship is basically a one-year renewable contract. They should make the scholarship agreement such that if you quit, forego a bowl game or "opt out", you have to pay back the value of that year's tuition, fees, room and board, meal plan, etc. IMMEDIATELY.
Not sure how colleges could actually collect, but they could say you can't get your transcripts released until it is paid in full (similar to paying outstanding campus parking tickets to graduate).

So we're basically admitting "student athletes" are just mercenaries...hired by the school for short-term profit.

Understanding the logic doesn’t mean it’s not quickly deteriorating the sport

The opt out is only for this year
It will become the new norm
The only was to address the issue is to expand the playoff, which would also have the added benefit of making the sport more relevant outside the South and parts of the Midwest.
16 teams with first round being played on campus would help a lot IMO

Lo and behold, people are making a value choice in their lives.
Just like we all do every day.
It's a shame for people that appreciate college football like we do, but it is what it is.
You can't fault a person for making the best of their life. At all.

The recent trend (last 5-10 years) that everything is about championships takes away from all leagues. It used to be making the playoffs, a bowl game, championship game, etc were a notable achievement.
Now, the BS like Charles Barkley wasn't a great player due to him not winning a championship.
