I’m surprised Pennsylvania didn’t make the list.

That's b/c 85% of the population is too old to move. Seriously, it has the 2nd oldest population in the country.

It's my home state and I love it and miss it dearly, but it has lost population over the last 25 years.

Most of my family is from Ohio and PA. I’ve been ready to go back and visit. Haven’t been there in 9 years.

We love Chicago when I lived in west loop. We are now in a great suburb and are very happy here.

But the taxes are insane and are about to get a lot worse.

We can do a lot better in the south and we will move back there in 2022 hopefully.

Illinois is the poster child for a metropolitan area ruling the lives of people 200 miles from it.

I'm surprised at the exodus in those outer counties, though. I would think there are some affordable, hot spots out there. The state as a whole can't be that bad.

The worst place I've ever been in America was Thomson, Illinois. It made Appalachia and the Mississippi Delta seem amazing by comparison. The place was grey, cold and everyone there under the age of 60 was an alcoholic and rude. There is a cloud of anger and rage hovering over Northwestern Illinois that I've never seen anywhere else.

Taxes are brutal and the politicians are crooks. How bad? During the week of Christmas PBS decided to premiere a 90 minute documentary about all the crooked politicians Chicago and the state have had.

My in-laws live in one of those green counties. Over the past 15 years they went from a 6% sales tax (Chicago was at 12.5%) up to an 11% (Chicago is ~15%) on everything and an extra 1% on soda. They're already looking at leaving.

I guess the state constitution has something mandating a flat tax and this fat frick governor of theirs bankrolled a referendum for a progressive "fair tax". As polls showed it going south he jumped on the TV for a Covid update and flat out blackmailed voters saying he'd raise everyone's taxes if it failed. Barring stupidity the fatass is going to end up being a 1 term governor...he's up during the President midterm ejactulations which almost always swing to the party not controlling the WH.

You obviously haven't been to Beardstown then. They make the poor white in Mississippi look like they're ballers. As mentioned Cairo is also a shithole.

The problem is that it's not just Chicago but you have the liberals from U of Illinois & Illinois State and the worst part of St Louis (E STL) who have just enough to screw over the rest of the state. There are laws there that are in place because they were needed due to decisions by Chicago's previous 2 mayors.

Meanwhile, in Texas,

Before this year, Texas has been on a long stretch of steady growth in population. Between 2000 and 2010, the state's population grew by 4.3 million people. Between 2010 and 2018, the state added another 3.1 million people, for a total population of 28.7 million, an increase of 14.1 percent.Aug 10, 2020

In 5 years we will see stats about everyone moving back to these cities/states.

Actually, these states will explode with population in 10 years when an accurate census is performed.

My good friend is retiring from the Chicago PD ...I believe his time is up in August. He already bought a house in Tenn.
Want to talk about Cairo, my mother owned two bars and a hotel there back in the 70's. I went to a private school there for a couple years before we got out during the riots.
I own 50 acres north of there on the Shawnee Forest. Beautiful country a little south of Carbondale. You should check out the wineries there ...the wine trail is awesome.
What's brutal are the taxes. That's why I live across the river in Kentucky.
frick Pritzker and frick Madigan. They have ruined the State.
70k homes pay 2.5k in taxes...and that's just the start.

I'm one of those people. I moved to Florida due to the weather, no income taxes, and politics. Only thing I miss about Illinois is deer hunting and change of seasons. That's it.

Agee, have lived in the west loop now for the past 20yrs. It was turning over when we first moved here, but taxes are ridiculous.

Moving is in the cards within the next 5yrs.

But I have enjoyed my time, the people, just hate the politics.

It's not. But that state is run by Chicago, and taxes keep getting jacked up to pay for Chicago culcha. So even in a solid red county people are getting fricked. All their money goes to Chicago, and they see nothing in return for their taxes.

Most of Illinois (by area) leans slightly conservative. Chicago fricks everything up for the rest of the state...

thats the opposite of reality

quote:

In reality, Chicago only gets 80 cents back for every dollar it puts in. The suburban collar counties fare even worse, with DuPage County getting back only 31 cents.

quote:

Downstate Illinois benefits from the state tax and spend mix, the study wrote. “The 96 downstate counties, as a group, receive about 50 percent more in state spending than they contribute in tax revenue.

quote:

A popular belief is that when it comes to state funding, Chicago gets all the public money. But a recent study found, that downstate counties, for the most part, get back more than what they send to Springfield.

For example, for every $1 St. Clair County sends to state coffers, it receives $1.13 back. Madison County receives $1.10 back.

In the rural counties, it’s even more. Clinton County gets $2.42 back, and $3.08 is returned to Randolph County for every dollar it sends, according to the study. Only Monroe County receives less, getting 49 cents back for every dollar in taxes it pays.
