The next hero to don Batman’s cowl will be a black man, named Tim Fox, DC Comics has revealed.

The identity of the new Batman, estranged son of Bruce Wayne’s business manager Lucius Fox, was announced by the comics publisher on Thursday. The new series will be written by John Ridley, the screenwriter of 12 Years a Slave, with art by Nick Derington and Laura Braga. It is set in a future Gotham City controlled by the villainous Magistrate, where all masked vigilantes are outlawed and Batman has been killed. Fox, as a new Batman, will rise up to save the day.

Ridley had previously revealed that the next Batman would be a person of colour, telling the New York Times that it was the first time his two sons had been “genuinely excited” about his work. “They appreciate the things that I do. They’re happy for me. They’re great supporters. But they would much rather see Black Panther than 12 Years a Slave, let’s be honest,” he said in November. “So to be able to write the next Batman, for them to know that this next Batman is going to be black, everybody else on the planet can hate it, have a problem with it, denigrate it, but I have my audience and they already love it.”

I'd start to feel insulted if I were a minority having all of these companies simply replacing white characters with non-whites. It feels patronizing.

Luke Fox already had a cape and cowl as Batwing.

I like that it’s Lucius Fox’s son.

This would have been a stunning and brave move 20 years ago, but regular black men are kinda played out.

They really missed an opportunity to make him a non-binary, pansexual, illegal immigrant, Muslim in a wheel chair with a speech impediment.

NOW you're talking some 2021 stunning and brave.

Yeah at least it's not an asspull. At least not for comic books. I could roll with this.

Purposefully leaving out that this is out-of-continuity, reveals your thread as cheap shitposting. Be better.

Wouldn't it just be another character at that point?

There have been multiple Flashes, multiple Robins, multiple Green Lanterns, multiple Ant-mans. This is pretty standard in the world of comics: passing on of a mantle.

But that's not what's happening with this comic. DC isn't killing or retiring Bruce Wayne. This is an alternate universe future imagining of Batman, which is part of a series of DC future imaginings happening as an "event" next year.

Make it a continuation of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air timeline. Judge Phil becomes silly rich timing the stock market right (going from millionaire to billionaire), but someone he threw in jail eventually kills Phil and the rest of the family when he makes parole. Will witnesses this while hiding in the attic and Jeffrey was visiting his family in England at the time.

A distraught Will changes his name and moves to Gotham city, taking Jeffrey (in the Alfred role) with him.

It’s based on a character from the early 70’s.

Batwing is a popular enough character that they believe he can sell a book as Batman?
