My martini recipe:

Put a martini glass in the freezer. Get it cold.

4-6 dashes of orange bitters (Angostura)
2 oz of Beefeater London Dry gin
1 oz of dry vermouth (Noilly Prat)

Stir vigorously with quality ice for 45 seconds-- do NOT shake.

Strain into glass. Add one blue cheese olive. Peel a lemon rind and express the oils in the glass. Dump the peel in the glass.

The most perfect cocktail in the world, and it will knock you on your arse.

Ratio of hard liquor. Lack of sugar and sweeteners.

Manhattans and Martinis are all booze.

Hawkeye Pierce drank martinis.

James Bond drank martinis.

Enough said.

I might even add the gimlet, despite its use of lime.

Raymond Chandler/Philip Marlowe drank them, and they were hugely popular among armies given their medicinal qualities.

Yeah, I'd feel secure drinking a gimlet at a hotel bar.

You have to have a scotch on the list, and this is the best scotch cocktail by a big margin.

Sazerac

+ Rusty Nail and that's the list.

As much as I like the sazerac, if you want a gin drink, I'd probably go Gimlet and replace that.

Had someone call me a "less than manly" term that is also another term for a cigarette while drinking a Manhattan. Just because it's served in a cocktail glass. His tune changed once he had a sip.

I'd probably have to pass on this motley ingredient list. As long as you like it, though.

Old fashioned
Sazerac

I’ll begrudgingly allow martini since it was the drink of James Bond.

But that’s it. That’s the list.

And Bond's Vesper-style martini substitutes gin for vodka, which I see as a slightly less masculine move. But Bond gets a pass.

I hated them until I was 40, and then I started making them proper at home. My recipe above is my recommendation, although purists say it's either olive or lemon peel, not both. I like both, as the drink slowly gets saltier as you finish. The lemon peel nicely offsets the heavy booze.

Orange bitters are NOT negotiable. They are essential and make the drink.

Now, every other cocktail seems like a poor substitute.

The cocktail club I belong in has a saying, “It’s your cocktail”. You make a cocktail to your liking as long as you have the basic ingredients to call it a cocktail.

My “go-to” cocktails:

Old Fashioned
Sazerac
Manhattan
Whiskey Sour
Whatever specialty whiskey cocktail the bar I’m at is serving

I’m not really big on hard liquor outside of whiskey.
