I'm cheap and just use herbsaint...after all you're just rinsing the glass.

And to somewhat answer this pretty interesting thread, I can honestly say I somewhat measure a man based on how they take and/or make an old fashioned. Seeing someone muddle a fruit cocktail at the bottle of a glass will make me judge you pretty quick

I guess "all over the place" is a stretch I basically only go to California when I travel for work.

My first one was a regular speakeasy in Carlsbad that dressed up as a tiki bar and only sold tiki drinks one night a week. They actually made me Google the daily password and say it to get in, which is kinda weird. LOL.

False Idol in San Diego was next.

Some tiki bar in Palm Springs that I cannot seem to find online. They have a tiki bar or two there anyway, but this one was more speakeasy style.

Oceanside has one, though now I'm second guessing whether it was 100% tiki or just a regular speakeasy. I'm pretty sure it is though. I definitely had a mai tai

Three Dots and Dash was on my list when in Chicago, but never made it in. It is pretty famous/well known. I suppose its kinda hard to call something a speakeasy when it is easily Googled, but "speakeasy style".

EDIT - Went to one in Long Beach too! I'm not a lot of help in other states outside of CA, haha.

Absolutely agree. Corpse Reviver and Last Word are my 1A/1B old cocktail recipes.

Gin is a man's drink.

Indeed! Gin and Whiskey were the drinks of men back in the 30s-40s when men were men. Gin is a complex, strong spirit that holds up to whiskey on many levels. It's more for the refined gentleman while whiskey is the rugged (thanks to years of marketing and brain manipulation)

Vodka is for the chicks and soys, because they need juice in their cocktails.

Old Fashioned
Manhattan
Sazarac
Gin Martini

This is your Mt Rushmore as you point out, only your order was indeed reversed.

Tonga Room- San Fransisco
Smugglers Cove- San Francisco
Tiki ti- Los Angeles
Crazy Suzy’s- Minneapolis
Mai Kai- Ft. Lauderdale
Latitude 29- New Orleans

There is a very small local group in NOLA that I know of that has a Tiki Cocktail Club that meets and makes authentic tiki drinks, all the mixers, very detailed. I have noticed the increased popularity of classic and authentic tiki drinks over the recent years.

Edit: Over Thanksgiving break I have been drinking-
Old Fashions
Whiskey Sours or satsuma
Ramoz Gin Fizz
After a few I end up just making a drink on the rocks or neat.

And Bond's Vesper-style martini substitutes gin for vodka, which I see as a slightly less masculine move

What? No it doesn't. It supplements gin with vodka

“Three measures of Gordon’s (GIN), one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel.”

Adding extra booze to an already very boozy drink is masculine AF.

This thread is delivering. Great input by all. Corpse revival #2 is on my bucket list, and it's either that or the Last Word that requires the rather expensive green chartruese.

I'll include a classic of high proportions not yet mentioned: the Aviation.

I make a couple of those a week. Really strange but addictive flavor.

Do you like it? I have walked in a couple times and ended up not staying because I am just not a fan of their atmosphere.

Tiki Tolteca is awesome, though.

I do like L-29. With Beach Bum Berry owning it and having met him several times it’s hard not to support. He moved to NOLA and is world renowned with his own bar locally.

As tiki becomes more popular I think you will have more authentic bars opening.

I find this to be a measure of a really solid bartender. Not sure if it's difficult flavors to balance, or if you just need access to higher end stuff and know how to use it, but I found very few bartenders that can perfectly execute this drink.

It was a lot of trial and error, but I found the perfect measurements for a really amazing Aviation:

2oz gin
.375oz maraschino liqueur (luxardo)
.375oz creme di violette
1oz fresh lemon juice

Serve it up in a chilled coupe, and you'll come back to this one over and over again.
