Dude, it's okay that you don't like Borat, but you're arguing something dumb. You're also arguing inconsistently. If you didn't think the box office mattered, you wouldn't have used it (idiotically) earlier to try to support your point.
More importantly, any chance you could drop the "humorless dolt who lacks self-awareness" bit until after you've had a chance to see the movie? This is a thread about how the movie is being received, but you (along with everyone) hasn't had that chance yet. Come back on Saturday to bitch about how a comedian is making fun of an idiot you like. At least then you can lie about having seen it.

Watching Borat for the first time is great. It is one of the least rewatchable movies I’ve ever seen though.

Sacha is hilarious, but he also uses the Michael Moore school of editing. A lot of things in all his shows/movies are spliced together (quite amazingly) and totally out of context. He's a master at it. Can't wait to watch it.

I disagree. I re-watch it once a year or so and it's still hilarious. It no longer has the shock value, but still funny.
I actually think his Bruno movie is funnier.

You got some memes, some articles, and a sequel. . .and then everyone stopped talking about it.
Cringe humor will never move the cultural compass, as can be seen by the abject void of imitation films.
A "Cultural Phenomenon" comedy would be movies like The Princess Bride, The Jerk, Blazing Saddles, Van Wilder, American Pie, Superbad, and such. ETA: American Graffiti.
Those movies changed the trajectory of Hollywood, and are still often quoted, parodied, and copied.
The entire Borat thing, while a really good movie, was just an expansion and furthering of the old radio/TV "man on the street" trope. It was executed well, but it wasn't groundbreaking or genre-defining.
The Jackass series is still the standard-bearer for amateurish cringe-humor, best I can tell.

My concern is the execution of the sequel.
Listening to Sasha speak in recent times, it seems the movie was made to sway potential voters. Even the timing of the release screams intent.
I get a sense this will be less "jabs at general American cultural norms" as the first one was. . .and more of a "look at the evil Republicans and Trump supporters"
Maybe he can pull it off, but he has never been great at political theater.

people quote borat as much as these movies. If you went up to someone and said VERY NICE HIGH FIVE or VERY NICE HOW MUCH, chances are they know you are quoting Borat. those quotes are still heavily used in society. just look at TD. How many times is the very nice gif used? just go look at the recent coach o threads.
it say it wasnt a phenomenon is to downplay it. Borat was everywhere. the yellow V bikini is still recognized from Borat.

The only horror that I can think of that everyone talked about even though most hadn't seen it was Blair Witch Project. That marketing campaign made most people feel like they had to see it.
Paranormal Activity was not on that type of level in terms of cultural phenomenon.
