That question was the ultimate setup question. Wallace intentionally conflated "white supremacists" with other Trump supporting groups as well as militias. This is the lowest form of politics. It's expected of the candidates and their campaigns, but never should a "fair and balanced" moderator stoop to such low levels. He pinned Trump into a corner that yielded one of two results:

1. Trump says "Of course I condemn white supremacists. I just did so 2 days ago." By doing this though, Trump would be calling his supporters and 2A protected militias "white supremecists," and he is not going to do that.

2. Trump tries to clarify the difference between true white supremacists and his support groups that are not racist. The problem with this approach (which he attempted to do) is that it can lead you to appear to not denounce actual white supremacy thus looking as if you support it. It takes a skilled, deft politician to accomplish this, and Trump is not that. He has only been in politics for 4 years, so he doesn't have the experience to work his way out of these gross gotchas. At least not on the debate stage.

Wallace needs to be fired. He won't be, but he deserves it. This question crossed the line, and it shows just how much Wallace was in the tank for Biden. I genuinely was surprised at this.

If only the white supremacists hadn't burned and looted Minneapolis and Portland, and Seattle, and...oh wait.

Why couldn’t he just say “I condemn white supremacists”? I mean seriously, what the frick? Both white supremacists and communists are bad. Could have lumped them both in as evil.

He doesn't like to condemn anyone who's willing to support him.

I addressed this in my OP. Why are you asking a question that I have already answered?

I think he said "sure" when asked...but is it really on topic? Who has been causing all of the damage across the country. White supremacists MUST seem irrelevant at this point, right?

His response should have been “Of course I condemn white supremacy, but who has been lighting our fricking cities on fire.”

Trumps answer was very adept. Stand down and stand by. He didnt throw his supporters under the bus or acknowledge that they were white supremacists but did call an end to confrontation.

Wallace is a pos for repeating the Charlottesville lie

Fair enough, but it was definitely a setup, that I don't think Trump wanted to walk into.

Joe Rogan is the way and the light. He would play that perfectly down the middle and ask the pointed questions and not allow them to go unanswered. Continuing to have politically motivated debate moderators is a fruitless endeavor.

The left's definition of 'white supremacist' is a white person who loves America. So that makes Proud Boys a white supremacist group.

It was set up on a tee for Trump and he still whiffed at it

All he had to say was, “yes I condemn white supremacy, so you Joe Biden condemn ANTIFA?”

We might look back at that as the moment Trump lost the election and I’m a Trump voter

You used piss poor reasoning.

He could easily condemn white supremacists without alienating legal militias and support groups.

Or give coach speak: I condemn any form of racism or hate group and move on to insisting that law and order be instilled in the country.

Because the left would then claim that he acknowledges part of his base are white supremacy groups. I wish he had demanded Biden answer the same question and remind everyone of who Richard Spencer has endorsed.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Wednesday that she was briefed before the release of a controversial intelligence assessment and that she stands by the report, which lists returning veterans among terrorist risks to the U.S.

Yeah I remember when veterans were being labeled a terrorist threat too...

His response was:

Sure, I'm willing to do that. But I would say almost everything I see is from the left-wing, not from the right wing. I'm willing to do anything, I want to see peace".

How is that different from what you said he response should be? Are you taking issue with him saying sure instead of "of course". That is absurd if that is your issue.

This. It's not fricking hard. Trump knew it was a bullshite false equivalency question by Wallace so I get why he acted like he did but how the hell are you not ready to answer this when one of the topics is race?

What is the cost of Trump saying he denounces white supremacists groups?

Are these Trump-supporting militias now going to vote for Biden? Are they so dumb they can't understand Trump is only talking about white supremacists? Or that this was a gotcha question?
