To do what? Act like a hostage negotiator then get shot in the head by the criminal? That will last all of one episode.

Y'all don't seem to have a great grasp on what the frequency of calls to the police actually are.

Not every call is for a violent situation. Or even a potentially violent situation.

Having the "social worker" in the car with a cop essentially eliminates that cop from assisting other officers in that precinct.

Fire Fighters are rarely called to actual fires. Defund fire departments!

*I acknowledge that this is a terrible analogy, but it was funny in my head.*

There are plenty of situations that would never get violent that social workers/counselors could help de-escalate instead of officers.

Majority of calls to police are non-violent calls (they're forever getting called in for homeless people loitering, noise complaints, suicidal/mental health reports, child abuse, etc.).

These are some of the worst domestic calls

You want to send a social worker in a homeless camp full of drunk / high men?

Suicide reports often have a weapon involved, when the person doesn’t comply to put the weapon down & advances is when the cops shoot.
You think a social worker is going to get a grown arse man to talk a man down from holding a gun to his head?

There is a reason why social workers have a cop with them in child abuse cases already, if you think a social worker can go in & remove a kid from abusive parents with no incident then you have no clue how the real world works.

To add to your point, a social worker is only going to help if the client wants to help himself. They aren't miracle workers.

Why wouldn't you if they have the training and experience to handle it?

Some could, absolutely.

I don't think the social worker argument implies sending social workers in place of cops, except maybe in certain situations. They'd be there in support of armed officers, especially in potentially violent situations.

This is no different then counselors working in psych wards. We physically handle people like that all of the time.

Do the people in psych wards usually have access to weapons? Because mentally ill people on the outside do

People who want to add counselor/social workers to ride along with officers aren't talking about sending them out to deal with violent cases. Can we stop with that shite already?

You do understand that these often go hand in hand, right?

You think social workers don't face that on a regular basis already?

Social workers don't just handle child abuse calls. Their scope is a lot larger than that.

Here's another thing to consider. A licensed social worker (therapist) makes about $120 an hour for his/her services. Is the city ready to match that pay? I highly doubt it.

True but that’s why they issue them magic wands instead of guns.

The real magic is convincing them to leave their private practice of a comfortable office charging clients $120 an hour - to hit the streets at night making roughly $20 an hour.

They should be hiring those "pie in the sky" college students to fill these roles, how quick would they turn into MAGA-hat wearing conservatives?
