I almost feel sad for you that you are unable to think outside of the left-right box. Almost.

No, no, no! These problems would be easily solved by social workers.
Send them in already!
People who want to add counselor/social workers to ride along with officers aren't talking about sending them out to deal with violent cases. Can we stop with that shite already?
They're talking about sending them out to deal with people with mental health issues to free up police for crimes they should be addressing. It literally prevents officers from being put in a position where they're firing on a mentally ill person. If it gets violent and you can't handle it at that point, you call the police in. This is no different then counselors working in psych wards. We physically handle people like that all of the time.
The misinformation on both sides is so fricking annoying.

I've lived in Louisville for 45 yrs and the Democrats have ruined this city.
Downtown is boarded up and the people that actually want to work aren't able to. The Mayor has rolled over and taken the side of these rioters/looters instead of the average citizen.
Lots of regular people here that just a few short months ago leaned left will now be voting Republican, so there is that.

Yeah, no shite. Still defunding police departments and replacing cops with social workers.
If you defund and replace...you're left with sending in the social workers...
I'm not against finding a better way to deal with mentally ill folks rather than police, but that will likely end up being an ever expanding category with the way the social sciences work.

So how does the 911 operator differentiate between someone with mental illness and a regular violent perp?

No you don’t, not to the degree we are talking about on the streets. Centers that handle people with mental disabilities handle only the least violent and in controlled environments, plenty often the police are called to deal with them also. Dealing with someone on drugs on the street or in their home is a hell of a lot different then in a controlled environment.
Furthermore, centers with people with disabilities have numbers. Often times it takes 4, 5, or maybe 6 people to hold someone down. That’s absurd to have in the real world and will never happen.

No, they won't.
At least not for Trump. Maybe they will locally.

In rational areas, no one is getting rid of whole police forces to replace them with social workers (and I say rational, as its been irrationally suggested in somewhere like Minnesota).
Here, as part of the Taylor settlement, they will be adding social workers and counselors through the use of forfeiture funds.

It's my understanding you'll be in a "ride along" with an officer. At least that's how they're talking about doing it here.

Is Louisville a two cops per car city? If so and if it is a "ride along" situation, that's quite literally replacing a cop with a social worker.

There are plenty of situations that would never get violent that social workers/counselors could help de-escalate instead of officers.
Majority of calls to police are non-violent calls (they're forever getting called in for homeless people loitering, noise complaints, suicidal/mental health reports, child abuse, etc.). Lots of opportunity to free up police officers to handle what they've been trained to handle if you employ social workers/counselors for non-violent calls.

It depends on the district and area. And in some calls, I don't see why you could free up a police officer in that ride along. Or even send the cop to assess, call out the social worker so they can move along.

To do what? Act like a hostage negotiator then get shot in the head by the criminal? That will last all of one episode.
