Robert Fripp/King Crimson - best guitarist the general public really knows nothing about?

My brother was a original King Crimson fan so I had exposure to them back in the early seventies. The music was just too bizarre for me back then as I went down the more tradition rock n roll path.
I have recently been listening to an older Robert Fripp play and I must say I understand what my brother heard in him. He is about as "technically proficient" and unique player, songwriter and/or "music stylist" as I have seen.

Fripp worked with Bowie for awhile.
Another one would be Andy Summers (except having been part of the Police)

I saw King Crimson a few years ago. There is so much happening musically on stage at once that it's almost impossible to keep track of it all.

Maybe the youngsters, but he did it to himself. IN his own words, "I’m a very difficult person to work with" and I think that's putting it nicely. Even withdrew, if I have it right, from the public after wrecking relations in King Crimson.
SO yeah, great guitarist, but he kinda torched his own legacy... and you're right about how great it could have been!

King Crimson and Fripp are amazing.

He did a lot of work w/ Brian Eno. His guitar work on Here Come The Warm Jets is phenomenal.

Absolutely. Eno, is another (while not a guitarist) who is amazing, and the general public also knows nothing about him.
ETA The general public knows nothing about Roxy Music, as well.

Or Islands. Or Larks' Tongues in Aspic. Or Starless and Bible Black. Or Discipline.
Or a whole bunch of their live stuff.
And listen to it LOUD.

Fripp is one of the most unique guitarists ever. I would consider his style to be somewhat "minimalist" which is probably why I like him so much. The sounds that he can make without really "shredding" is jaw-dropping.

Most mind bending innovative guitar player ever.

A lot of the best guitarists are relatively unknown by the majority of rock n roll music enthusiasts. Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani, Vito Brata, Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, etc aren’t exactly household names.

There is a documentary about Eno that goes through his contributions to other bands and his own stuff that really shows what a genius he is

And Zappa's band, and Bowie's, and Talking Heads. Played with Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, and Nine Inch Nails among others. He's got a lot of great solo albums including some really experimental stuff. He's an extremely talented multi-instrumentalist.
He formed a band with his friends from Cincinnati called The Bears. They're an awesome psychedelic pop band. The other guitarist in that band is Rob Fetters and he's a really good guitarist too. I don't know why his career never took off. I think maybe he was looking for a solo career and didn't want to work for someone else's band because it sure seems like a lot of bands would love to have him.
Fetters made a great solo album called Lefty Loose Righty Tight (which, of course, also includes a guest appearance by Belew). It also holds up well to the psychedelic experience. You can listen to it (in very good quality) at the link below.

I saw the Adrian Belew Power Trio with maybe fifty other people on the Progressive Nation at Sea cruise. They played City of Tiny Lights in their set which was cool. Shot the shite with him on the pool deck the next day.

I was going to mention him or Robert Quine

I need to listen to some more Robert Quine. All I have heard by him is his work with Lou Reed. The "Lou Reed Live" album with him on there is outstanding. Good choice.
