Who here has been laid off due to COVID and what do you do now?

Tuesday will be my last day of work as I’m getting laid off. I work at the old Ormet alumina facility in Sorrento as a supervisor/operator. Going from making 90k to sitting on my arse. I’ve applied to countless jobs including a lot that don’t even pay $15/hr. I’ve had zero success.
So I’m here contemplating what my next move should be. Sure I’ll file for unemployment, but I can’t settle on that. I’m considering everything from going back to school and getting a trade degree (I&E, HVAC, etc.) to getting my realtor license to getting certified to sell life insurance and doing life insurance telesales.
Ideally I would like to stay in operations, but it doesn’t seem likely that I can count on getting another job in this field during this job climate.
For those who are in my boat, what actions have you taken? Just looking for some suggestions and advice.

You may have to be willing to leave Louisiana

no, I grow and sell massive amounts of weed.
I've been deemed essential
But isn't that some shite. Americans love to get fricked up in times of uncertainty. To some, those are the best times to do it.
So, its literally the best of times and its the worst of times.

Sorry for partying/running a legit business and being realistic about these shitty days

What’s your educational background?
If DJT gets re-elected, I think this economy will rebound quickly.
Hate to hear you are losing your job but good on you for not settling. You will land on your feet soon.

some chick I was acquaintances with back in my bachelor days posted on the Insta last night they she had lost her job this week but saw it as a great opportunity to focus on her vlog. her and her pug celebrated by splitting a large pizza. I shite you not.
it certainly seems like you are making much better decisions about your future than her. good luck!

I would apply with other plants anyway. Some are looking to replace bad employees because they have the opportunity during lean times.

I'm in logistics/operations. To this point, I've just gone back and updated some certifications and gotten some new ones to make my resume look good. TWIC, forklift certification, OSHA 30 hour training, a certification in distribution and warehousing. Stuff like that.
I'm striking out on my job search. Anything I'm qualified for I apply for, but there are also plenty of people more qualified than me applying for that same job.
Later this week I may do some research on local trade schools.

Yeah COVID killed the alumina market. Began costing us more to produce than what we could sell for. The facility got some PPP money but it wasn’t enough for them to keep it open. The people who own it now just decided they weren’t going to lose any more money. Meanwhile Noranda Alumina in Gramercy down the road is just chugging along. Go figure. Rumors rampant that we will shutdown and re-open later in the Fall but who knows.

What's your family situation like? Are you married - have kids?
Like another poster mentioned you can relocate. Several areas still have a lot of jobs but you have to be willing to move.

If you're in Harrison County, Ms has some good tech schools. PRCC, MGCCC, etc.

I’m a residential builder and feel like it’s only a matter of time before I’m out of work tbh. I think the bubble pops next spring. Personally if I’m out of work I’m going to go back and do something in the medical field.

I’ve always wanted to relocate to the Houston area to be honest, but our situation right now isn’t ideal. We’re going to be having our first child this month so yeah we’re kinda stuck right now until things settle down.

We have a lot in common, minus the child. My job situation in NELA is pretty unstable and honestly has been for awhile. We're laying off at a pretty rapid pace and I have been afraid for awhile that I'll be on the wrong end of those decisions soon. Either way, the opportunities around me were very limited. I also had been wanting to move to Houston and finally made the decision to do it while working remotely. Some risk involved, but sitting around waiting for the toxic work environment to clear had risk too.
It's only been a week but I feel like I made the right decision. There are a lot of listed job opportunities here but I honestly haven't had much luck with them yet. It's like the jobs are open but they are not ready to fill them. At least, that's what I keep telling myself after resume after resume and application after application yields nothing in return.
Best of luck to you Dualed, it'll work out one way or another. Good on you for looking to come out of this better than just sitting back and collecting that juicy unemployment. I know lots of people that are doing that. I'm already building plan B and C for when/if that call comes to me. I'm not afraid or too proud to go to work in a restaurant to keep my bills up to date. Worked too f'n hard to fall behind financially again.

Bachelor’s of Science from LSU in Natural Resource Ecology & Management. Went to school to be a Wildlife Biologist. Had grad school lined up in New Mexico and funding fell through so I went a different route and got into chemical plants. Graduated in 2013 and at this point I don’t feel like I could even go back to doing anything related to that degree.

Haven't gotten laid off, we were deemed essential early on but we starting to feel the effects of the virus. Not so much in my industry but because supply chain. We have contracts and their is plenty of work out there for us but our customers are not spending money because no one knows when this will end. But I got word Thursday that warn notices will be given out to 60 employees next Friday. They will be getting laid off in October. We are going slowdown big time. Management is taking this opportunity to weed out some bad apples then will rebuild the staff when things start cranking up.

Good luck man. I've been laid off since March. A friend tried getting me an interview with his company but was told my resume was "too high level"; whatever the frick that means.

I hope you have planned for the worst even in the best times and have many months or years worth of income to get you through.
I can only speak for myself, and I make about the same as you, but I would do my best to work on my own. I’m not sure doing what, but I would be really angry that the government has made me
Lose my job and wouldn’t mind making some of my
Income under the table.
