So all the old people on my facebook feed are sharing a post that says that an offshore buoy just recorded a wave of 37.4 feet and that the biggest Katrina wave was 28ft.

Is this factual in anyway?

It's true. BUT wave height for Ivan was almost 100 feet I read earlier in here. Kinda standard fear mongering FB post.

Is there a halfway accurate formula to figure out what kind of gusts that would produce?

You'll typically see something like a 20% increase for potential gusts once you get past 100mph.

Any chance this thing runs more NE and impacts New Orleans and Baton Rouge, or are we close enough that it’s pretty certain it’s headed for the Texas/Louisiana line?

Anything is possible at this point. Careful bringing East up though, its frowned upon. Landfall will be SW Louisiana, where exactly? Not sure. We will have some impacts but should not be too crazy. Windy and rainy. Hopefully no tornadoes

Could very well be. Rogue waves aren't all that uncommon with powerful systems. Ivan had a rogue wave of 91 ft. that was over 600 yards long. Ivan also had estimated waves in the eye wall over 130ft.

*shudder*

Being on a boat in the middle of the ocean and being caught in a rogue wave might be my biggest fear.

False.

quote:

The model predicted significant waves height to be 15.4m (50.5ft) high. Indeed, waves in the eye of the hurricane were observed to be extremely high, upto 16.9m. Two buoys in the Gulf of Mexico were close to the pathway of Hurricane Katrina; one buoy capsized and last recorded waves of 10.5m, the other buoy recorded the waves throughout the passing of the storm and found significant wave heights to be 16.9m. Statistically this means that the highest waves could have been as high as 32.1 m (WMO, 1991).

NHC wind field size graphic appears to put BR at the outer limit of the TS wind field if it comes in at LC and there's a 70-80% probability of TS force winds and 2-4 inches of rain (based on current track).

Any other GODD information/estimates of what BR area will get wind/rain wise other than that?

Pop just called. He’s hauling arse. I’m leaving too now. Just going to load the dogs up in the truck and head east. Probably sleep in the truck and ride it out.

It’s a redundant question, sure, but not everyone follows every single post in this (record breaking) thread

If it bothers you that much, just don’t reply
