The wife got herself roped into a "secluded cabin" near gatlinburg which is actually a nice cabin, in a complex with about 100 other ones and nice views of weeds and some other houses. I let her pick it, didnt check behind her, and here we are. Being stupid is expensive. Neither one of us is happy with it.

We are (eta: not) bailing out tomorrow whether I can get my money back or not. Gatlinburg is a hell hole right now full of white trash, I guess since it's the 4th.

Right now my plan is to head for tallulah falls since that's only 80 miles away. Any better ideas?

Eta: well, per the wife we are not bailing and are staying here. Any ideas of how to enjoy this are welcomed. It's raining its arse off and the place is infested with fat white trash. Right now my plan is to drink lots of whiskey.

How long are you wanting to spend somewhere? Chattanooga is good for a couple of days. North Georgia (Clayton, Helen, etc..) is a pretty area. Highlands, NC? You could always look for an AirBnB on one of the TVA lakes on the TN river and rent a boat. Watts Bar, Ft. Loudon, Chickamauga.

Call Blackberry Farm or BlackBerry Mountain. Splurge. Enjoy.

Cashiers, Highland, Bryson City or Brevard are options in NC if you can find a room. They’re in approximate same direction as Tallulah Falls.

What can of activities are you looking to do?

Drive to Asheville. Look into the Pisgah Inn on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Have you tried Smokey Mountain National Park? It’s pretty much the reason that town exists. Get off your arse, stop complaining and go hiking.

Well, in that case there is lots of stuff to do in gatlinburg. Get a custom airbrushed t-shirt to commemorate the occasion. Take some old-tyme photos (the ones with you wearing chaps holding a gun with her dressed up like a saloon girl holding a whiskey bottle). Go to the arcade. Eat some taffy. Buy a pocket knife. Buy some “moonshine”.

Haven’t been in 20 years or so but just stayed in the park whole time, and did the alpine kart slide thingy at the ski park or maybe that was in Colorado once, I can’t remember.... but if you can’t fun being on vacation anywhere and not being at work then you Must suck. I can have fun drinking and not working in a place like meridian, MS. But you’re in the GD mountains and bitching

Don't be so hard on yourself. Look at it this way...You are NEAR some of the most beautiful and amazing scenery in the country. So, avoid the strip. Plan day trips and picnics to some of the outlying areas that are probably 1-2 hours away. You're always driving around that area anyway, so no big deal.

I have no clue about current conditions due to COVID-19, so check ahead. But here are some recommendations you could look into:

Newport, Tennessee area.

Want to see THE greatest swimming hole? Midnight Hole! We've camped at the marvelous Big Creek Campground. Midnight Hole, an area where Big Creek squeezes between large boulders, forms a deep, beautifully-colored pool.

Getting There:
GPS Info. (Latitude, Longitude):
35.75222, -83.10889
35°45'8"N, 83°6'32"W

Take I-40 East from Newport, TN approx. 16 miles. Exit I-40 at exit 451 (Waterville). Follow the road past the Walters Power Generating Station to a 4-way intersection. Continue straight through and follow signs to the group camp.

Go white water rafting! Many outfitters on the Pigeon River. It's damn controlled, so check ahead. We went on USA Raft Pigeon River. In Hartford, TN. 1/2 mile off of I-40 @ Exit 447.

Smoky Mountain River Rats.

Cades Cove

LINK

One of the prettiest areas of the park. Plenty of hiking options. Can get crowded so check ahead.

You're in a great part of the country! Enjoy the outdoors.

When people say they went to Gatlinburg and loved it, they didn’t mean hang out on the street for a week. You’re surrounded by the National Park which is the main attraction and depending on time of day and which entrance you take you could spend hours without seeing people. Hang out in the mountains all day and go to town at night to eat maybe. If you don’t have kids you can venture out even further.

Do the Roaring Fork Motor Trail by car and stop at several spots along the way to hike. Bring an ice chest and have a picnic up there somewhere. I’ll say that some of the coolest trails might not be marked so be on the lookout.

Cades Cove will be crazy busy this time of year so avoid that area.

Oh, one other thought...

Make sure you close whatever device you're using after you post and not let her see this thread.

Highlands/Cashiers NC. if you are think Tallulah, go here instead.

If you do go to Tallulah, hit up the panther creek falls trail. 3.5 miles in to falls. bring a bathing suit and water shoes

Black rock mountain has some good views as well.

Outdoor gun range in forrest service area if you bring some guns is nearby as well

In Gatlinburg there are wine/cider/moonshine sampling about every ten feet. Trust me, it is a blast.

Did anyone mention the aquarium? We went one evening years ago while visiting the area (open til 10 on the weekends) and really enjoyed it. It’s actually one of the best I’ve been to honestly.

Best time to view waterfalls is when/after it's been raining. Max Patch is always a good trip on a clear day.

Do this.

If you want to venture in to Knoxville for the 4th, come drink whiskey and BBQ with me.
