It's about time, but there's finally a serious effort to change the name of John Wayne Airport in Orange County because the actor was famously racist and homophobic.

The Orange County Democratic Party passed a resolution, calling out Wayne's "racist and bigoted statements" and demanding the O.C. Board of Supervisors rename the airport Orange County Airport.

quote:

It's pretty amazing folks have tolerated the name this long. Back in 1971, Wayne told Playboy ... "I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don't believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people."

And, there was more ... "I don't feel guilty about the fact that 5 or 10 generations ago these people were slaves."

And, then the actor set his sights on Native Americans ... "I don't feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them ... There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves."

quote:

The airport was named after John Wayne in 1979 ... AFTER the Playboy interview.

I'm sure the newly named Soyboy Airport is just around the corner.

We just want to take down Confederate statues to get justice for George. We're not trying to change society or erase history and culture. Stop being ridiculous.

If we go down this road do we rename anything related to MLK because he was homophobic?

I move that the only forms of travel now offered at the airport formerly knows as John Wayne Airport be horse rides and/or wagon trains.

Let's see how far they are willing to go. I bet the Wright brothers were racists. No planes for you!

He was a homo. He was famous in Hollywood for showing up at casting meetings where it was only him and one young man present. The Duke would walk in wearing only a gun belt and a smile.

I guess I can see why they wanted to keep that a secret.

So what? John Wayne was just an actor. The people, to whom John Wayne meant anything, are dying off. Even if he wasn’t a racist the airport would eventually be renamed for one of the current generation’s heroes.

Isn’t Biden quoted of saying some racist comments a few years ago?
I guess that is not as important as some name of an airport

I am offended by your use of the term extreme racist. this is John Wayne the greatest manly man actor ever to be in a movie
