Sparta, GA. I've never seen so many cool old houses rotting away.

Alexandria, Jackson, Beaumont/Orange, and Shreveport are depressing for me.
At least there is some economic growth in Lake Charles, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and the north shore. There is a tiny bit of opportunity there, which makes it acceptable.
Alexandria is just very sad for me. Maybe it would be different if it had oil under it.

St George is so depressing that it can’t even become a city

It isn’t just the south. I used to leave on the eastern side of Pittsburgh. That city is surrounded by very sad, depressing places like McKeesport, Washington, and New Stanton.
Even larger, self sustaining towns like Greensburg, LaTrobe, Altoona, Erie, Beaver Falls, Jeanette, New Castle, etc. are depressing. You can tell they used to be bustling little coal or manufacturing towns. They are all barely treading water or in steep decline. So many of the working aged people are on disability. Many younger people are opioid addicts. The blight is bad, the taxes are high, and the opportunity is very low.

I've taken up the hobby of listening to police scanners lately. I listen to the Madison County, Madison City, and Huntsville City feeds. I chose Madison because it has much more scanner traffic than surrounding counties. To make it more interesting, I kept a tally of calls, Shootings, Domestic Disturbances, etc. Over the weekend, I listened for approximately 10 hours total (while cutting the yard, just sitting around etc.) These are my tallies from this past weekend (6-19 - 6-21).
-Shootings or Shots Fired (including at least 3 actual people shot) - 21
-Cuttings/Stabbings - 3
-Burglary - 6
-Theft - 13
-Fight - 14
-Assault - 6
-Vandalism - 4
-Subject w/ gun - 17
-Domestic Disturbances - 53
-Unwanted Person - 33
-Prowler - 7
-Stolen Vehicles - 5
-Intoxicated Driver/Person - 15
-Attempted Suicides - 7
-Drug Related - 20
-Mental Patient - 5
- Chase (vehicle/foot) - 5
Bonus:
-Wrecks - 45
-Wreckless Driving - 10 (Including a person clocked at 150 mph, just a crazy note)
Those are good numbers for such a short time period.

Not really "small," but Alexandria, LA. Lot's of nice memories of that town visiting relatives over the years.

Once mfg moved to China, many towns, and smaller cities began to depopulate and became economic nightmares. I travelled all over the SE, SW, Eastern seaboard and mid west and it was amazing how many factories and manufacturing plants closed in the early 2000’s. Marion, Indiana is a good example. Lots of high paying union jobs with GM, Zenith and Ford are all gone. Most of the people in those jobs went on unemployment, then welfare and are living in some nasty housing.

So the equivalent of fifteen seconds in Chicago?

I enjoy driving through those type of towns, especially on my way to the mountains in Arkansas. Don’t know why.

I was born and raised southwest of Enterprise down towards Samson. There is farming and Fort Rucker. I was home last weekend to see family and take care of farm business. Enterprise is a great little southern town. One High School in largest class in football. An hours hop to Black Creek and little over an hour to Panama City Beach. It is a nice place to live if you like low crime, slower paced lifestyle. Yankees please stay away.

I am not sure how to fix it, but you can tell that Alexandria has been having a hard time for several decades. Maybe Louisiana will entice an automobile manufacturer or something to the area and it’s fortunes will change.

Not many places can match the truly depressing cities of Donaldsonville, LA and Lake Providence, LA.
See, D-ville actually has lots of great paying jobs nearby, but most of its residents don’t work and never will. Lyndon Johnson destroyed this country.

I mean, you spent much time in rural Illinois lately? Or rural Michigan?

This is happening in Europe also. I have read several articles about buying houses in small Spanish and Italian towns for 1 Euro. The only catch is you have to agree to fix them up. Would be perfect for someone who can work remotely.

Pretty much. But I'm still surprised at the crime in the area, particularly Domestic Disturbances. I heard one call of a lesbian couple fighting in their apartment complex parking lot. One was armed with an axe. I shite you not, I heard another call last week sometime for an, "Unruly 9 year old". Not that that is "crime", but it gave me a chuckle.

I bet a lot of them have something in common
