You don’t have Corona deaths if you don’t test for Corona..
That may be true but also realize that we were told if we don’t do anything the infection rate will go exponential and everyone will get it. If that were true, you can only ignore It so long before the bodies pile up in the street. Which obviously isn’t happening because CNN would be all over it.

Our numbers are trash, dude. I know a lady who has a friend that died in a car wreck. They tested the body for Corona and sent her a death certificate with covid as cause of death. Wisconsin just audited their corona deaths and revised their number down by hundreds.

CNN is pushing a narrative that the US has responded and is doing terrible, they aren’t headed to Lagos Nigeria or Mexico City or Beijing to do investigative journalism into those places and a hundred others that are either not testing or are outright lying about their numbers. This would take away from the agenda of OMB

Where is the data on developing countries you spoke of? All I see are developed countries.
The Economist has the only publicly available database and doesn't have many countries yet. Most developing countries don't do the same kind of real-time reporting as developed countries, so there will be lag. Given what's happening in the developed world, we should see the same pattern of increased general mortality compared to baseline once the reporting catches up.

Yes because we know China’s numbers
Also each country has different ways of reporting, it’s not some global unified system. I honestly wound trust either the IS or the global numbers, it’s pretty much guaranteed they aren’t accurate.

No need to go to China. Their government has been super transparent.

The US is doing more testing and reporting than any other country on earth.
Yes, we must see how much self inflicted damage we can do just because OMB.

What did those countries do? Lock people in their homes? Shut down the use of their credit cards? Should we have done that?
Every country tries to match a response consonant with its values and population. Some of the effective methods have been authoritarian (e.g. South Africa essentially holding people under house arrest), others involving consdierable tech (e.g. South Korea using electronic push-alerts to contacts), highly solidaristic approaches with very high and early adoption of mask wearing.

Yes. And for good reason.

SK did more than that, btw.

COVID hit Europe and North America fast (due to global travel)
it is starting to get a foothold in Africa and Central and South America.

US is fraudulently inflating their numbers while China, Russia, and others are fraudulently under-reporting their numbers (by a really really lot), and while shitloads of countries just don’t give a frick enough to bother tracking.

To a certain extent you're right, but a response similar to Germany would've been possible for us if this hadn't been politicized from the jump and we'd tried to handle it more as a public health than a PR problem. The public has a limited reservoir of trust to follow massive public-health interventions. We drained our reservoir mighty quick.

we're doing relatively poorly
Look at the zip codes of the hardest hit areas. Then match the demographics.

We are the only country that incentivizes over-reporting instead of under?

I don’t know but it wouldn’t surprise me.

Statistics can be easily manipulated.
You put in a variable that benefits one thing next thing you know the numbers are skewed.
It happens all the time in sports, stock reporting, political reporting, weather forecasting, and now even death toll.
With the right data sets you can make something that looks negative look positive.
