Harley invested millions in marketing to create an in-your-face tough-guy image that simply isn't connecting with younger riders. This decision was made years ago, aimed at attracting Baby Boomers who didn't see themselves as hippies, but it's left a lasting, dated impression of the brand in the minds of most Americans.

But Harley is also a victim of the political environment it created. Unable to stave off foreign competition, all-American Harley once asked the Reagan administration to protect its market share with tariffs. The administration complied, which set a dangerous precedent for Harley as a politically protected American manufacturer. So when Europe imposed retaliatory tariffs on American goods in response to recent U.S. trade policy, they targeted three all-American categories: blue jeans, bourbon, and big motorcycles. Sales were already struggling in the U.S.; they tanked in Europe. To dodge the tariffs, Harley tried to move some production to local markets, but that backfired when the company was lambasted by President Donald Trump and other politicians for outsourcing labor. Even Harley's most loyal customers saw the move as betraying the company's blue-collar American roots.

We really need to look at companies that hire foreigners over US citizens. We need to protect America and the American worker.

Reagan saved that company. Thirty years later they want move production to another country. Kinda reminds me of the dummy Kratz. They are free because they are Americans, but shite on America at every turn. I wish the progs would move with Harley Davidson to another country

Marketing image aside... Harley makes some good bikes.

Their problem is the same problem all US mfg's face, imports (mostly Japanese brands..) also make good products for less.

Harleys are too expensive for young people. That's why most people who ride them seem to be retirees.

all-American Harley

Harley Davidson hasn't been an all American motorcycle since the 60s. The "bikers" would always get mad when you'd tell them their front ends were made by Honda and their carburetors came from China.

HD is super expensive, and less people are wanting to die because some soccer mom runs over them because she is texting her dinner order to Applebees.

Harley turned into a clothing company that also sells motorcycles. They have had more government intervention than just what was mentioned in the video. They were given BMW's intellectual property by the .gov to make a good bike.

straight up greed more than anything is what’s brought about the demise of Harley. Literally everything adorned with the Harley Shield is grossly overpriced. Some models start at almost $30,000 for a base model. And Top of the line with all options can be almost double that amount. Even their smaller bikes average around the $20,000 range. Then on top of that you add in the fact every 5,000 miles you’ll be bringing your Harley back to the dealer for a scheduled service that will cost you $300 to $500, depending on what service is due on the bike.

Contrary to popular belief, there are still a whole lot of guys, even young guys, buying and riding motorcycles. Go out on on sunny Saturday during spring and summer and you’ll see them everywhere. But the average bike rider either can’t or won’t spend the money it takes to own and maintain a Harley. Basically it boils down Harley has for years priced themselves out of their core customer demographic.

Fewer people are riding motorcycles, and younger people aren't receptive to biker culture. People are also ultra risk averse now which will continue to grow.

I think most younger folks view loud beastly bikes as ostentatious.
