Doing a first listen to it right now. I think it’s alright, nothing special. Only on the fourth song.

How much of it would you label as sky screaming so far?

I haven’t really noticed anything too bad yet. But I try to not get too upset when an artist spouts his or her liberal ideals. I know it comes with the territory.

I enjoyed it on my first listen, but obviously need more listens.

Overall I like it, but I have a feeling it’ll grow on me more, especially after hearing them live. This album seems to capture how they sound live more than some of the others (more rock and roll). The guitar tone on Overseas is incredible.

I agree on Overseas
But overall it strikes me as a very well done but somewhat bland effort
Nothing political/cheesy that I found annoying on TNS. But I also think the high points on TNS are better than the equivalents here.

After 2 listens this morning, it strikes me as a typical Isbell album. 2 or 3 really good songs, and a bunch of just okay songs.
Overseas
It Gets Easier
Letting Her Go
All good songs. The rest didn't make much of an impression on me after 2 listens, but perhaps they'll grow on me.

Pitchfork gave this album a higher rating than Southeastern and Something More than Free. This tells me this album is probably meh

How much white guilt do I need to enjoy it? Not sure if I'm woke enough.

So far “what I’ve done to help” and “be afraid” have annoyed me.
I like the sound of dreamsicle

I have listened twice so far, and both times have just been meh.
Nothing really grabbing me and making me want to go back and listen to any specific songs again. With the last three albums there were standouts on the first listen.
So far Dreamsicle and Overseas are probably my top two tracks.

It’s honestly great production but to me the song just aren’t that interesting. Nothing really grabs me like previous albums of his.

I listened while working so didn't pay much attention to the lyrics. Overseas has some really good instrumentation. Letting Her Go is clearly about his daughter, and having a daughter myself it resonated. That wsa the only one I paid much attention to the lyrics for.
I'll give it another listen tonight after work. Often times after I listen to and process the lyrics I gain an appreciation for it.

Pretty much my take as well.
Wtf kind of shite is St. Peter’s Autograph?? I’m working as well, but is he talking about his lovers ex ghost???

“Orange man bad” and “My wife’s son” are my favorite two tracks so far

quote:I had to look that up. Apparently the inspiration came from the fact that one of Amanda's good friends, a guy who had worked on a couple of her albums, committed suicide in 2019 and it hit her really hard.

Going back and listening, it makes sense. Especially the lines
quote:
Sometimes it’s nothing but the way you're wired
And that's not your fault
We're all struggling with the world on fire
And the fear we're taught

Only Children is a beautiful song

Neal casal. Friends with Amanda and used to play with Ryan Adams in the Cardinals.

It’s mediocre. If it was released by John Asbell it wouldn’t be mentioned on this site. That’s not to say there aren’t a few gems.
Dreamsicle, River, Only Children, and Letting You Go are good if not great songs.
The rest is very meh to bad.
