re: Who knew O was a significant upgrade from Les?

not really. I was pretty confident that he would, at the minimum be a solid hire just from the way the team performed once he took over during the 2016 season when he was the interim coach and Ensminger was the OC.
but against crap opponents. Did you see the Bama games pre-2019?
quote:
I was very impressed with how much more organized and disciplined the team appeared from the very first game.
Did you see the Florida game in 2016? Fournette started a fight pregame and then dressed out when he wasn't cleared to play and probably cost LSU the game because he was WAY under 100%. If O's discipline was good that game then we would've sat LF as planned and a healthy Guice would've gotten those carries. That Loss (as a heavy favorite) cost us a NY6 game
quote:
Also the offense really ran so much more smoothly and was more effective in that interim season, averaging 464 ypg in the games that Ensminger was the OC in 2016 which was more than Lsu had ever averaged in any one season in the entire history of LSU football.
Against Mizzou doesn't count though
quote:
Injuries suspensions and the lack of depth that Miles had left led to the stumbles at the start of the 2017 season but the team came on strong after that.
More fake news. LSU walk-ons should be able to beat Troy at home. Stop with the dumb excuses.
quote:
Then 2018 was somewhat miraculous with the way the team performed under the circumstances, and end the season ranked #6 in the country.
2018 was in line with the average seasons LSU has had the last 20 years. Nothing special by any means. Nothing terrible either. There were plenty of underwhelming moments incl. getting skunked again at home against Bama
quote:
It was pretty easy to see great things were coming going into the 2019 season.
I agree but you also have to acknowledge that most of the key players were Miles' recruits (except Marshall and Chase). Burrow was the crowning gem but he literally fell in our lap and we only had to compete with U of Cincinnati for him. Still, credit to O for getting him and taking the risk on Brady. That's where O gets most of his credit, if not all
quote:
Anyone who had their eyes open could see this was a good hire early on.
I would ask you which stocks I need to buy during this sale on the market but I think I'd be scared to death of your answer

Based on this premise, Apple should just hire you as the CEO and nobody should have any problem with it or give an opinion about why that move would be dumb as frick
Thats just it...having an opinion is one thing but being a brat about it and not at least giving Coach O a chance is the act of being the dumb frick.
I was somewhere in the middle of being a dumb frick (by my definition) and a dumb frick (by your definition).
I guess I'm setting my self up for some comeback zingers.

I wouldnt be inclined to start a thread patting myself on the back, but yeah i knew he would do alright. Les miles style of play became untenable (actually it had been for a while, against great competition). I fully supported the hiring of eaux, because he seems like he was very open about how he learned from mistakes, had a good run as an interim coach at usc and lsu, is known to be a great recruiter, and displayed unprecedented emotion and passion at his press conference.
Having said that, i never imagined he would architect the GREATEST TEAM EVER in all of the storied history of college football.
Well done eaux

As far as a sure thing unless it was either Myer or Saban everything else was a crapshoot. Les was not a good coach way too many time management goofs. So far Fisher and Herman have done nothing to say they should've been the choice.
Looks like the binder worked for O. LSU has a great staff and recruit their asses off and put themselves in a great position to continue to win.

I was a huge supporter for O.

he wasn't my first choice but I was happy with the hire. There was no doubt in my mind he would be better than Miles.

not I, that is for sure. But I've eaten my crow and am happy for Ed. It's clear that he learned everything he could from his time at Ole Miss and it showed at USC and it's showing even more now.
It couldn't have happened to a better person. Let's bask in the Glory boys. I am.

Was sort of meh on O, but was willing to be patient and give him every chance.
Now, how will O recover from the loss of Brady and Burrow? If he recovers well and gets 11 wins, he's golden.

I first started to realize that O was an upgrade upon seeing how quick and decisive he was when things aren’t working out. He pulled the plug on Canada (a highly sought after offensive mind) in short order. Has shown ability to quickly make changes and try to upgrade constantly. He’s been basically been the antithesis of Miles since he’s taken over.
This was my mind set following the hire as well. I was less-than-enthused when Alleva removed the interim tag from O. And while there have been missteps along the way, O has bounced back every time.
Here's hoping to years of success!

I thought he would be. Coaching tree of Jimmie Johnson and Pete Carroll. Part of Miami and USC teams. Saw what it took to win at a very high level. Saw something other than SEC/LSU ground and pound. Not suggesting I thought we would be 15 and 0 national champs in 2019 when O was made permanent HC after the 2016 season.

sorry if it came across that way as I don't wish to be like the standard rantard
The intended point was that LSU Football is a $850 million business, and we hired a guy who literally could not have gotten a job at any other Power 5 program in the nation at the time. I'm not even sure UTEP would've hired him as head coach. Those are just the facts.
Did it work out and make everyone look like geniuses, like Alleva? Yep

The problem with this logic is he was literally Ole Miss's all-time worst head coach statistically in his only HC attempt

The problem with this logic is, He was not the same at USC or LSU as interim. The other side of this coin is Miles was not that great. Compare and contrast. Miles plays JJ in the NCG and refuses to change QBs with LSU having 50 yards at half-time. Coach O sees the QB situation after spring and recruits Joe Burrow.
Miles had so many blunders, besides the Offensive problems it was an easy call.
LSU did not need the best coach in the country. They only needed one that was better than Miles. That was an easy call.

I'll be the 1st to admit I thought it was at best a lateral choice. I liked O but mostly as a passionate recruiter. Not as the guy leading the program. I was underwhelmed with my impression of the search. I'm pleased to admit I was wrong. None of the guys I thought would be upgrades have proven anything since we hired O. He started from the ground up with his vision of culture and talent development. As a parent I've always preached to learn from your mistakes and don't repeat them. Cant say I've always lived like that but O clearly learned as much from failure as he did from his successes.

I thought it was a lazy hire, but he's made me and 95% of the people talking after the hire eat their words.
