@JonRothstein LSU freshman Trendon Watford will declare for the 2020 NBA Draft while maintaining his eligibility, per his brother.
Averaged 13.6 PPG and 7.2 RPG in 19-20.
Was one of the best freshmen in the SEC last season.

I believe the rules have changed that you can hire an NCAA approved agent to retain your college eligibility. Would love to see Watford return. Above average college player but not ready to play in the NBA

He’s not ready. Needs to become more aggressive, on both sides of the ball.

His tweet did not sound like he would be returning. However many of our players had a similar note last year but ended up returning. Although that may have been due to the pressure for alleva to retain Wade

Maybe some of these kids just hate having to do homework because I dont understand why they are so eager to not get drafted.

He’s a great player, I really don’t think this is the right decision for him tho, but I don’t know his situation. Hope he returns.

I can’t see him getting drafted this year. Has a lot of improvement to be and nba player. I do think he can get there, but he was a liability at times, particularly on defense. Not enough of a scoring threat to overcome that and get minutes IMO

He may make a team one day, but I don't see him being a contributor. He's too slow to play PF in the NBA and too short to play center. He's too much of a tweener. Emmitt has a similar problem. Not skilled enough to play small forward and not big enough to play PF or center.

Agreed, and this is not a knock on Watford. Unless you are an elite prospect you need to be extraordinary in one area (athleticism, defense, 3pt shooting) in order to make a roster. Watford is average to above average in all categories but nowhere skilled enough for the NBA right now

He will be a second rounder. Easily.

Can’t see it “easily”. And I don’t think he’ll stay in if that’s his grade

He's no Ben Simmons, that's for sure.

And, the staff encourages the guys to go do this and figure out what they need to work on and get tips from some pro evaluators.

My gut tells me he's entering just to get feedback, but if he does go, I could see him going late second and getting paid in the G League while he hones his skills. Definitely needs to work on defense and the mental aspect there to make up what he can for being a slow footed guy.

Same thing as last year. This is the smart play for anyone in a similar situation. Go through the process (whatever that may be with the current state of things), get your full evaluation, and then pull out of the draft. There’s no penalty for doing this - Watford would be foolish not to take advantage of this.

Not a surprise and he SHOULD take advantage of the rules that allow him to get feedback. If he’s not good enough to be drafted right now it is better to know that on the front end rather than being surprised in draft night

This is from Feb.
