Workers at Amazon’s Staten Island warehouse will stage a walkout on Monday over the online retailer’s decision to keep the facility open despite a confirmed case there, and wider concerns that the e-commerce giant is not adequately protecting its workers against the health and economic impacts of COVID-19.

Up to 200 staff members will walk off site at 12:30p.m. Coordinator Cristian Smalls told CNN: “We're not asking for much. We're asking the building to be closed and sanitized, and for us to be paid.”

Currently, Amazon employees who have either tested positive for COVID-19 or who have come into contact with an infected person, must stay home, and will be given two weeks’ paid leave, CEO Jeff Bezos said in a blog post.

Let me stay home, not work, but keep paying me. That’s not much to ask.

frick is that going to do? Unless you're testing every employee as they walk in every day with a real-time result test (which doesn't exist) you're pissing in the wind. You can be contagious for up to 14 days without showing symptoms. So all it takes is one person showing up without realizing they're infected and your "sanitation" was for nothing.

Can’t wait to see all of the people defending a massively powerful company and it’s billionaire owner rather than the workers who are busting their arse for menial pay.

Look at the first couple replies

Amazon (and Whole Foods) had a chance to really handle this situation with class but of course they went in the exact other direction. I have no clue why people continue to back this company

Hundreds of people in a warehouse touching cardboard all day is indeed a Corona petri dish.

Not sure what options there are though, honestly. Its an essential service right now, and home delivery / people not going into stores for those purchases reduces far more risk in the macro than the warehouse cesspool creates.

Let them walk out and fire them with cause and hire the thousands of other people currently laid off. Amazon is going no where and middle class white women aren’t going to stop impulse buying shite online because of a little bad press

No work no pay.

Amazon shouldn't pay then shite.
When somebody at work gets the flu the whole building doesn't shut down.

What should Amazon do differently?

Yep, but it's in NY, so I'm not surprised.

I'm not defending either one, I'm just criticizing their stupid demands. If you're concerned you'll catch the virus, say you want paid leave. Not some nonsense about sterilizing the warehouse.

Take temperatures before each shift, have a small army continuously cleaning the area, offer additional PTO so that workers aren't unnecessarily risking their health and can better attend their families. The biggest company in history can afford these things

HEB had a confirmed case at one of their Central market stores. Worker is out on paid leave, store was sanitized overnight, and anyone who wanted PTO because of it got it. Plus they bumped pay for everyone by $2 an hour. HEB really is the GOAT.
