Last week a number of parishes started handing out free breakfast and lunch to all kids who came, this was via the school systems.

Today, several parishes announced they are shutting it down due to JBE's "stay at home" order.

I'm confused by this, because the order specifically allows "getting food to go.

In Alabama, they have been using the bus drivers and buses to deliver the meals.

Our parish had an employee that tested positive, so that's why we had to stop our feeder program.

Got a call from my kid's school this afternoon saying they would be giving out food in a drive thru manner tomorrow and Friday. I guess they were already doing it a couple days last week but you had to go to the school and go in. They stressed that nobody was to get out of their vehicles.

Probably because the parishes are about to run out of money and don’t want to spend it on meals. You have to realize the sales tax revenues the governments rely on a monthly basis will be 80-90% less next month. Cash is tight and the feds aren’t helping.

Ebt people have plenty of funds to buy their children food, especially now that the casinos are unable to collect their cash stipends.

It’s not going over very well. They’ll go back to serving meals pretty soon

Either of these two:

1. It’s deemed too risky considering the new order
2. They quickly realized that people were taking advantage of the system and found out they were giving out more meals than allotted students.

I've heard that at least part of it is due to the food handlers not having PPE to serve the food properly.

This is kind of sad. And before anyone says it, by God, many of these kids are lily white and poor.

They will be fine with $500 per kid. Schools should never have had free lunches to begin with. Parents should be made to volunteer to pay for the lunches.

In case anyone needs to know which sites have been suspended. Not all parishes indicating suspension have completely stopped serving, some have just consolidated to serve at a select number of locations.

I’m not sure how much money people think food stamps are, but it’s a little less than $6 a day per person. I believe the people getting “cash welfare” are getting $100 a month for a year and have drug tests and work requirements.
That’s why they have free or reduced lunch. There are a lot more people getting free/reduced lunch not eligible for food stamps. I used to teach elementary school. It’s not these kids fault.
