Neighbor recently purchased a used boat and it came with a 50 HP Tohatsu outboard. First time I've seen an outboard by that manufacturer so I googled it...found this
Just curious, anyone familiar with this brand?

Tohatsu, Japan's oldest outboard manufacturer, has been producing high quality, durable outboard motors since 1956. The ocean-tested engineering that enables Tohatsu engines to work under intense demand and harsh conditions makes Tohatsu one of the toughest, most reliable engines on the market.
Just curious, anyone familiar with this brand?

IIRC they are the largest outboard man in the world.
Several other outboard man use Tohatsu guts.

I see a lot of them on the southwest side of the state. There are a lot of guys fishing da pool with them. I think Lake Area Marine pushes them pretty hard. IIRC Lake Area is authorized to pull the restrictor plates on the 40 to make it a 50 without voiding the warranty.
ETA: I think smaller yamaha and mercury motors use Tohatsu guts now.

People use them here in Alaska alot and seem to love them. Will probably be my next purchase.

I have a 2.5 hp Merucury motor that is made by Tohatsu. I think they make all of Mercury’s 30 hp and less motors.

Have a Merc 25 four stroke made by Tohatsu for 9-10 years. Never a problem and runs like a champ. Just changed the water pump for 1st time.

Good motors from what I hear, never run one myself but dealer buddy says they're solid.

Owned a couple in the late 90’s early 2000’s frickers were indestructible.
ETA one was a 50 on a 15’ bayhawk and the other was a 115 on a war eagle aluminum hull with cab that we used to shuttle crap out to our hunting camp.

Got a 1996 2 cylinder 2 stroke 25 that's hopped up to a 30. Starts first crank and hauls for a small motor. Smooth running too
Supposedly they sell more than Yamaha worldwide but they don't want to waste money on marketing here in the US since Yamaha already has such a large marketshare of the industry. So, their method is to make Mercury's small motors, sell some on their own, and use Honda to sell their brand in the big motors.

I've got an ancient one converted to a pond aerator.
Is old as me. Has never been into. Gets abused. Runs great.
I've never seen a bad Japanese small engine.
Ever.

Good motors, nothing at all wrong with them.

great motors tohatsu and nissan are the same motors just like johnson and evenrude used to be and tohatsu/nissan are the lightest weight outboards you can buy by a good margin
the nissan is the name brand and the tohatsu is the lower brand
they both use exact same parts and part numbers top to bottom so getting the tohastu saves you a few dollars while the nissan brand gets you a snazzier paint job and stickers all for a few hundred dollars more
he scored a great motor if its the 4 stroke, if its the 2 stroke TLDI then its more parts that can break with the pollution control air pump and belt that drives it
tohatsu mid range line - LINK

I don't think that is accurate.
