It is what it is. After the Bengals take Joe as the number one pick in the draft, they will hold the rights to him for five years. Hence, at that point, Joe doesn't really have any other choice but to play for them. At least until he fulfills his rookie contract.

For Joe, Cincinnati will be a fun place to be because it is so close to his parent's home and also because that's where his girlfriend and probably his future wife is from.

And who knows, maybe the Bengals' owner will try to get the monkey off his back and try to win a Superbowl for a change. I mean, you only live once so why not?

Nonetheless, I'm not going to lose sleep over Joe Burrow cause he is soon to become a mega-millionaire and if he wants a change of scenery when his rookie contract comes to a conclusion, then more power to him.

I think the way the draft works, if Joe sits out a year, he can re-enter the next year. If push comes to shove, if I was Joe, I would sit out a year. Long term, it is better for him to have a fair shot in the NFL than to be cannon fodder for a bad team and lose his health.

You are wrong. After Joe is drafted by Cincinnati at number one, Cincinnati will own the rights to Joe Burrow for five years.

Former #1 pick (1975) Steve Bartkowski has give Joe advice:

quote:

Bartkowski told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram he advised Joe Burrow to refuse to play for the Cincinnati Bengals if (when) they select him first overall in the upcoming NFL Draft in April.
....

Bartkowski was selected by the Atlanta Falcons with the first overall pick in the 1975 NFL Draft. The Falcons were an absolute dumpster fire during his tenure there, posting a winning record just three times in the decade he played there. Bartkowski views the current Bengals as being in a similar situation to the one he entered with the Falcons in the 1970s.

“It’s not the best organization,” he said about the Bengals. “You know, times change, things change. Atlanta wasn’t a good organization until Arthur Blank bought the team. It was a terrible organization. They didn’t know the right hand from the left to be honest.

“I know what it’s like to go to a bottom-feeder team. I’d hate to see that happen to him to be honest. They beat me up. I spent more time at the hospital recuperating from injuries my first three years than I did throwing touchdowns. It was tough.”

He said in an interview a day or 2 ago that he has ‘leverage’ in the situation. That certainly sounds like he’s considering it.

Actually, he doesn't have any leverage at all. As there is not anything he can do if he is drafted by the Bengals. As the Bengals will own the rights to him for 5 years subsequently. Not to mention that unless the Bengals get some kind of amazing deal they can't turn down, then that's where Burrow is most likely going to end up getting drafted.

However, it's not all bad for Joe. It's three hours away from his parents' home and Cincy is also where his future wife grew up.

Since when has Steve Bartkowski become a financial advisor?

Give me a break. Anyone can say don't play, but they are not in Joe Burrow's shoes.

35 million from the rookie contract plus about 25 million from each year of a franchise contract. That's 105 million.

So you think he gets that as a lump sum? Let’s say he gets a little north of $35 million rookie contract guaranteed (better than Murray’s deal last year) and 70% of that is a signing bonus.

Three year contact, front loaded, with fourth year option at first pick value pricing..that has to be agreed by both parties. Two year signing bonus upfront of 28,000,000! No negotiating.

Doesn't work like that.

Rookie wage scale in place now, it's basically all slotted as I understand it.

1st round pick HAS to have a 4 year contract and the team gets to decide if they want to add a 5th year option. Burrow can't negotiate any of that, it is set in stone.

Wrong! Miami will end up spending two draft pics for TUA when Detroit picks him. Detroit would be very smart to make Miami pay!

I wonder what that leverage is.

Anyone hoping Joe gets drafted to Miami needs to go compare the Dolphins last 10 seasons against the Bengals. They are horrible. The Bengals are a few roster moves away from being a wild card team. Hoping they draft Cushenberry and sign a few other o-linemen.

Saints had a pretty crappy track record until they took a chance on Drew

And that likely would have somewhat continued even with Brees if Benson wouldn't have eventually became a billionaire and started to actually care about the Saints winning, and not just about maximizing his profits.
The change with the Saints has more to do with Benson becoming filthy rich than anything else, and that's why the Bengals aren't going to change b/c they have a cheap owner.

Benson was considered one of the worst owners in all of sports, then he became a billionaire, and his legacy as a owner completely turned around.

Who cares if is a lump sum. The issue you jumped into was, "what if Brown keeps Burrow for 7 years via the 4-year rookie contract plus 3 franchise tag years". My point is that he could secure a very solid financial future with 7 years at Cincy (4 rookie, 3 franchise tag).

This gloom-and-doom bullshite over being the #1 pick at Cincinnati is laughable.

And as for being sacked... Burrow was sacked 35 times this season at LSU. The most in the SEC.

Anyone suggesting that he sit out a year is a fricking moron who probably has little more than a pot to piss in.

Bartkowski is not anyone. He is someone who was in the same shoes that Joe is in now.

I am suggesting that he CONSIDER (realize tough choice) sitting out a year if he can't force a trade. As to my financial situation. I own four rentals free and clear and own about 8 mortgages paying me an average of 10%.

If you want to compare academic achievements, I am happy to do that also.

Yes. For a franchise. He can't be THE franchise (No QB can be.)

Again, I might have been too harsh, but Cincy needs 1 of almost everything.

I didn't realize I was dealing with Slumlord, Esquire. Your position is suddenly valid.

Try the last twenty years.

Miami won their last playoff game in 2000.

Since then they’ve only been to the playoffs THREE times.

Cincinnati has been to the playoffs SEVEN times in that same time span.

They are not the worst roster in the league, Miami is actually FAR worse, and honestly an elite QB would put them in playoff contention immediately.

Joe is also the same guy who came to Baton Rouge even though it had been a veritable graveyard for QBs for over a decade. He signed up to lead a team to a national championship despite being in the same division with the current dynasty of CFB. He isn’t afraid of a challenge.

Joe may try to head fake Brown into trading the pick to a different team, but when they select him in April he is going to put on that hat and immediately get to work leading that team by example the way he did with our Tigers, and I’m confident he’s going to have similar success and have that team competing in January in short order.

It’s going to be a great story, just like his lifting of the LSU program back to the pinnacle of CFB.

Any talk of anything different is manufactured drama by nerd bloggers trying to drum up offseason clicks from gullible idiots with nothing better to do than mindlessly scroll through headlines.

WHO DEY!!!
