The second contract is the huge check.
He has to get there and still be perceived as worth it.

That franchise is a dumpster fire. They completely earned their national disrespect.

The Bengals are like the Bears in that the family's money comes FROM the football team, so it is in their best interest financially to be cheap, in order to maximize profits. All of the other teams except GB are owned by billionaires who can afford to spend money.

Where’s he getting $30 million from after taxes, agent fees etc? He’s going to set financially regardless of where he signs and he’ll have plenty of professional financial advice. Jimmy has said that they have their “team” in place to navigate the entire process.

He’s not sitting out as the OP suggested because that would be stupid.

The Bengals don’t care about building a championship team and surrounding Joe with the talent. That’s obviously Joe’s concern but there is little he can do about it without incurring some damage. The Bengals hold the upper hand unless Joe’s team can quietly negotiate something before the draft. Eli had more leverage because of his family’s wealth.

Joe seems to be legitimately unenthusiastic about Cincinnati.

Joe isn't an emotional guy. This is why he is a great qb. Not too far up, not too far down. That's why great players are great. Loose lips sink ships. Joe is quietly going about his business to get what can get when he signs that contract. Look who his agent is.

Joe is not going to Eli Manning the Bengals. He’s already said as much and his dad too.

He will own half the state playing for the Bengals. The other half, well, they're Browns fans.

35 million from the rookie contract plus about 25 million from each year of a franchise contract. That's 105 million. (ULTRA conservative estimate - the 2019 franchise tag salary for QB's is 33.6 million per year)

You are not aware that the NFL caps agent fees on contracts at 3%? His management team will make their larger fees on endorsements and other extraneous income.

His income tax bite (Fed, State, Local) would be 50% at the very most. So that leaves him with 48.5 or so after agent fees and taxes. Save 30, he has 18.5 over 7 years.

Joe is a clever lad. He can live on $2,600,000 a year for 7 years (plus endorsement income, etc)

Any other questions?

If push comes to shove, if I was Joe, I would sit out a year.
With Cincinnati's propensity to suck what if they end up with the #1 pick next year too? Does Joe sit out another valuable year as well?

He may try and force a trade but sitting is not a viable option.

I think the Defenders move up in the XFL draft to nab him

Eh, the NFL protects QBs probably more than college.

And Cinci wasn’t great but they also weren’t the worst in Sacks allowed per game or sacks %.

And Andy Dalton missed 8 games due to injury over a 9 year career.

People act like the Bengals are the browns and they really aren’t.

Best guess is Miami as a trade partner, as they have easily the most draft capital of anyone.

Is Miami really any better than Cincinatti? From an organizational standpoint I mean. They traded everyone off. They have been awful for many years.....

He said in an interview a day or 2 ago that he has ‘leverage’ in the situation. That certainly sounds like he’s considering it.

I would lose a little respect for him if he does the Eli thing. Not that it matters to him.

Make damn sure your agent gets you a way out after a few years if they refuse to strengthen around you.

The whole point of the draft is so shite teams in shite cities can actually put a decent roster together.

He is going to go to the Bengals and do well there. He is from Ohio, no way he shites on them. Bengals have some talent and will get more to give him weapons like at LSU.

Don't see it happening.

I'd say he has no chance at a hall of fame career if he ends up there.

it is hard the pass the ball when you are on your back...
ask who, up to know, was arguably the best QB to come out of college -Archie Manning

Cincy needs an OL if JB is to succeed there

Cincinnati has been about average in sacks allowed over the past 5 seasons (ranked 15.8 of 32 teams).

And why do you say that?

Even an average QB like Dalton had success at the Bengals.

It's not like they don't have talent on offense either, they just missed on a few O Line prospects.

They have a top 10 RB in Mixon and a top 10 WR in Green, plus a stable of good WRs behind him.

If they can get a half decent O Line, there is 0 reason for him to not have a good career.

I am sensing that Mike Brown would make an example out of Joe if he tried to force a trade.

Brown should absolutely trade the pick. There are scads of teams that are a QB and maybe another player or 2 away from being contenders. Some of those might be willing to let Cincy trade down to 1 and 2 this year and probably an extra 2 next year - possibly with a quality (surplus) player from that team trading up thrown in as well.

The Bengals basically need 1 (or more) of everything. A QB isn't going to change their fortunes. An influx of 3 to 5 very good players over the next 2 drafts might.
