Every mlb team had this under the guise of the manager needing information on whether to challenge an umps call. Teams used this for sign stealing at a varying rate. The Astros did it well and someone ratted them out. However having the camera pointed at home is standard for every team. You can believe there was only one team with nefarious use if you want or not. Your call.

I for one despise pine tar pitchers and believe they are the scum of the MLB. Ones that hide it on their glove and then pitch way over their head for an outing or two. There are hitters whose careers are at stake

If everybody is so distraught about this that the Astros will have the most HBPs in a single season in baseball history, why don’t they get so distraught over people stealing signs the old school way? Camera or not, sign stealing is cheating.

From my understanding they had a camera set up in the outfield to see and steal the signs.
The signs were then relayed to someone near to home plate that was banging a trashcan to alert the batters of off speed pitches.
In my opinion Analytics have changed the game of baseball forever. In the old days the pitcher might know the tendencies of some of the hitters and adjust his pitching accordingly. These days teams have entire staffs of nerds with computers to break down all the data and feed it to someone that calls all the pitches to the catcher/pitcher based on what the data tells them.
I think this is incredibly unfair to the hitters. In the old days the batters would know and learn tendencies of pitchers but they can't use that information any more because the pitchers do not call their own game. They are fed the pitches from the dugout.

The 1st and 3rd base coach (for lefties) would warn us what to expect the next pitch was going to be. They weren’t always 100% correct but it helped out because coaches are the ones who study the games, players are the ones who play the game. That’s the game of baseball.

I was taught 25+ years ago when I started playing baseball is to try to learn the signals from the opposing teams we played and actually went to watch them play on one our off nights. We had a 12 team league where we all played on the same field.
Also, we had signals that the runners would give to the batter if they could see the catcher’s signs.

I want to know the specific rule that was broken. They were tapping on a trash can to signal the batter.
I do agree it's some sort of cheating....but were specific rules in place to guard against their method?
