Sometimes I think Wade relies too much on analytics.
He dares them to shoot those 3's and all it takes is one person getting hot.
I'm fine with gambling some on 3 point defense if we have elite 2 point defense, but we arent exactly elite there either (certainly better than 3 point defense, at least).
We almost have the defense of someone who plays zone all game

I've heard Wade speak to their inability to keep vandy out of the lane....not having enough of the right type of defenders. Being that a 2 pt fg is more consistent and reliable, he is hedging his bets by having our defenders give some space and lure them into the 3 point shot
I've also heard Wade speak to this strategy multiple times before games. One time he even mentioned it would cost us some games down the road but due to our size we need to focus on being between the ball and the goal.
This is his strategy which is why he doesn't lose composure over it, like he had done so in the past.

Here's another element to poor 3 point defense - we start 3 true forwards, 6'6 Days, 6'6 Williams, 6'9 Watford. None of them have any business guarding a guard who can dribble drive or shoot the 3, yet we get into that situation a lot because a ton of teams basically play 3 guard lineups and we dont. Not to mention Smart is simply not adept to defending well at the arc either. So, we many many time have 4 guys on the floor who arent necessarily guys you want defending the arc.
The heavy forward lineup gives us advantages on the offensive end though. So give and take some there.
Taylor plays starters minutes. So often times LSU does have 3 guards on the court. Michigan St. is one of the better teams at defending the 3. They often have 3 Forwards 6'6 and up on the floor. UK often plays 3 forwards - 6'9, 6'10, 6'11. They are #12 at defending the 3.
Now, no one is saying LSU has to be that good. But shite, it's not like Days, Williams and Watford are unathletic stiffs. While you could say it might be more ideal to have several guards chasing 3 point shooters all around (like Arkansas does), there's no reason for LSU to be THIS bad at defending the 3 other than they simply put no emphasis on that aspect.

Yeah, this is nonsense.
Not really. We beat Auburn easily if we drove the ball instead of throwing up shots.

We’re great defending inside the arc and we’re one of the best at defending without fouling
I understand the part about not fouling since a lot of times we let guys score without getting in their way, but in no way shape or form are we great at defending inside the arc.

We drove the ball, got hit, no whistle.

well... I thought we were decent at defending around the rim until the last couple games. I don't recall letting any player have his way and blow by us.

Auburn couldn't miss from 3
They were horrible until the last 3 minutes. Even the announcers were asking why they were shooting so many 3s

All of what t'bird stated above is true.

For good shooters, the 3 point shot is a relatively easy shot to make if left unguarded. But if it is aggressively defended it becomes a low percentage shot. That is why it appears to be a "luck shot." You have got to be in the shooters face when he catches the ball. If you are 3-4 feet away and just reaching out toward him, he is open. It's fundamental defense, man and ball. As soon as you see the pass coming, they need to be in their face. Our guys don't react until the pass is already received.

He's not a very good game day coach! The proof is in the pudding!
Posted on 2/10/20 at 4:08 pm to josh336
Some of this is actually due to our lack of size. Without a true rim protector, our guys have to help a lot more then some other teams. So when someone drives on us or they swing it and we are watching the post, we are out of position and slow on recovery. We also don't want to recover too hard, b/c there is no one behind you if you get faked.

This is why you can’t put all your eggs in the analytics basket. Stats tell you what happened not how it happened.
Posted on 2/10/20 at 4:11 pm to josh336
I'm no basketball expert but with the way the rules are slanted toward the shooter, it's hard to guard someone that's got a hot hand and a quick release. Auburn got hot in the final 5 minutes. It was crazy that it seemed like every 3 PT shot went in. The defender was on the 3 PT line and they buried them.

Lmfao he’s had the best record in the SEC nearly 70% of the time he’s been at LSU after inheriting the worst record in school history. He’s about to complete the best back to back seasons here in 40 years and has had the best start to any career at LSU. You’re right, the proof is in the pudding for both Wade and you. He’s a winner and a champion, you’re a moron.

I asked the other day if it was something they had a hard time fixing, or didn't care. It's both. You make your own luck Will.

LSU is 222 in the nation for opponents 3 pt %. Opponents are making 34% against us. Last year it was 33.7%. Some other SEC schools:
Arkansas: 1 in the nation at 24.7%
Kentucky: 12 at 28.8%
Alabama: 24 at 29.4%
Leaders in 3's taken are at around 25 per game. So that equates to a 7 pt difference between NCAA leader and LSU.

But I am still consistently baffled by how many contested 3s our opponents seem to drain.
It’s really not that complicated. You let a (high level) college player see one go in and they can get hot.
Wade’s team’s problem is they don’t start guarding close until the person has hit a couple. That’s all it takes. We’re not playing in the Atlantic-10 like he was at VCU.
