Essential people, especially healthcare workers, still need to get to work.

It would be really nice if the political talk cound stay on the poli board and this thread could be used for information and to find out how Data is doing.

Of course, that board is a cesspool of hatred for the most part so I can see why some of it spills over here.

Anyone talking about how the Imperial College model was just debunked by the very scientist who made it? His initial forecast predicted 500,000 deaths in the UK. He now thinks it likely that total will be less than 20,000.

Turns out the virus is more transmissible than previously thought. Which means a large swath of people already were infected without ever knowing it.

Agree.

Meanwhile in Italy, the number of new cases has declined for the 4th day in a row, according to the WHO.

He was speaking about the UK, and the qualifier was WITH social restrictions and increased ICU capacity in the UK, the UK shouldn’t be overwhelmed. Also bumped up R0 from 2.5 to over 3. Said holding the economy back for 12-18 months was unrealistic but didn’t really provide a better idea. Mixed bag.

I feel like Los Angeles is losing their minds over this. Anybody see their mayor last night said they will be sheltering in place for months and is threatening to shut down both power and water to businesses they deem as nonessential? Seems insane to me.

For some of these politicians, they're currently only trying to make their way up the ladder. So it's a race to be the most extreme actor in this situation. "Oh you shut down for two weeks, we will shut down for 2 months. You closed bars and restaurants? We are shooting people that step out of their houses."

It's all oneupsmanship. And it's fricking dumb, and only making people panic more.

ETA: And LA pols are freaking out over this because it's politically fashionable. They didn't give a frick when they were ground zero for a new bubonic plague.
