Their mayor, Garcetti, seems pretty irrational to me. I listened to him on an episode of the Freakonomics podcast last year, and he had some pretty off the wall comments. One was that he's struggled with not judging his constituents as racists or terrible human beings if they dislike rampant homeless people in their neighborhoods committing crimes, etc.

His report was largely responsible for the mass hysteria we’re currently dealing with.

Maybe this has been discussed, and downvote away if so, but what are the chances that Spain and Italy are dealing with a different strain of CV19?

Scientist who warned of hundreds of thousands of deaths in the UK just pulled a jk.

quote:

He now says both that the U.K. should have enough ICU beds and that the coronavirus will probably kill under 20,000 people in the U.K. - more than 1/2 of whom would have died by the end of the year in any case bc they were so old and sick.

quote:

Essentially, what has happened is that estimates of the viruses transmissibility have increased - which implies that many more people have already gotten it than we realize - which in turn implies it is less dangerous.

The UK has been the worst model of social distancing since this started. They didn’t even mandate stay at home until yesterday

I don’t recall anyone thinking there’s going to be 2 million deaths.

The absolute worst case scenario is 80% of population gets infected with like a 0.5% mortality rate, and that just gets us over 1 million deaths. A more realistic worst case is something like 40% of the population gets infected and a 0.2% mortality rate, which would take us to about 250k deaths.

He's getting closer!

Our hospitals have plateaued the number of hospitalized positives btw, but still dozens upon dozens of folks in our hospitals "waiting on results". (Nashville only)

Really big news though. The wave has really been more manageable the last couple of days (nationwide) than expected after the initial huge surge.

PPE and vents are coming, antivirals are coming, warm weather is coming, etc. There is reason for optimism, just need to keep doing what we're doing another couple of weeks.

The article does mention that the spread is much more than anticipated, but stops short when recognizing what that means to the mortality rate.

The initial worst-case scenario predictions were saying 2 million deaths in the US, and best case was 200k.

That's probably changing.

Several of them are still posting and praying more people die either so they can win an internet argument and dole out "I told you so" to people or because Trump is a mean guy!

then you have the rest of you in a Chappaquiddick death spiral

china is lying about their numbers; we need to shut down travel

"just the flu bro"

italy is getting hammered by this, they will have thousands die

"yeah right, theyre just shutting down to make orange man look bad"

spain is the next italy, their growth rate is as high/higher than italy's was at the same stage

"EvErYoNe iS tHe nExT iTaLy"

new york cant keep up with demand, their cases are growing faster than either spain or italy did

"who cares, carpet baggers. laissez les bon temps rouler"

..so is new orleans

"did you guys see this person predicting 2 million deaths (more than american deaths in all wars combined in the 20th century) said well maybe not? obviously that means everything else that happened didnt really happen and we good lmao"

New data from the rest of Europe suggests that the outbreak is running faster than expected, said Ferguson. As a result, epidemiologists have revised their estimate of the reproduction number (R0) of the virus. This measure of how many other people a carrier usually infects is now believed to be just over three, he said, up from 2.5. “That adds more evidence to support the more intensive social distancing measures,” he said.

quote:

He said that expected increases in National Health Service capacity and ongoing restrictions to people’s movements make him “reasonably confident” the health service can cope when the predicted peak of the epidemic arrives in two or three weeks. UK deaths from the disease are now unlikely to exceed 20,000, he said, and could be much lower.

quote:

Most importantly, [The Oxford study] assumes that most people who contract the virus don’t show symptoms and that very few need to go to hospital. “I don’t think that’s consistent with the observed data,” Ferguson told the committee.

He basically said that his strategy is working. Not that his initial advice on dealing with this was wrong lol.

He also said that with mass testing that the UK will be able to get ahead of the virus and then broad restrictions could be relaxed. Which is exactly what SK did and exactly what many in this thread have been saying for weeks.
