I read every word of all of your posts, but this is you magnum opus. Impastato's is tGOAT. Keep up the good work. (cheers of root beer, and not the devil's liquid).

The city of Metairie? Maybe.

Smilie's opened around the mid 70's and prospered partly due to Elmwood Plantation burning down in 1978. Nonetheless good Italian Creole dining and a fantastic lunch spot.
Impastato's is all you say, have attended many rehearsal and other dinners there. Bumping into Saints players in the 80's was a plus.
You certainly know Uptown Nola 1960's + culture, and Nola dining as well as I imagine Fitzmorris would.

Impastato’s fettuccini Tom Fitzmorris, the arbiter, historian, and whiz of New Orleans dining and criticism, says it’s even better than the original served at Alfredo’s in Rome. I have not been able to compare, but I trust Mr. Fitzmorris.

At one time, possibly still, Sal Impastato (Sal and Judy's) made the red sauce for both he and Brother Joe's Restaurant. Joe, in turn, made the pasta for Impastato's and Sal and Judy's. Both are excellent restaurants.

The best three fried shrimp dishes in New Orleans are from Impastato’s, Pascal’s Manale, and Drago’s, in that order. I rarely order it, but when I do, I question why I haven’t ordered it more recently.
Imp’s has the best fried shrimp in the city

See above. I have a Book if Common Prayer in my right coat pocket. If someone claims to be me but does not have the 1928 edition with them, they deceive you and the truth is not in them.

Mr. Picou reached the second stanza of “I Fall in Love Too Easily.” He paused, and gave me the floor and the microphone. I knelt to one knee and proposed. She laughed and said, “Are you serious?” I was serious. She got up and exited. I don’t know how she got home, as Mother drove us and was waiting for us at Morning Call.

I waved but only got a response from your mother. Very attractive Asian women. Congrats.

I’ve dined at that place dozens of times and probably with a table less than 8 once. Unfortunately but it’s been awhile. The last time, my toddler aged kid was not having a good time so I took one for the team and me and the kid waited in the truck. I got my steak to-go.
With that said, their filet is great and rarely mentioned.

This post was a 5 course meal in itself. Im blown away at the historical detail and care with which every phrase is crafted.

I may need to go back. I loved it growing up, then didn't go for years. A group of us went about 7-8 years ago for a birthday, and most of us were unhappy with it. I was shocked, because I always remembered how great it was. Plus I love Sal and Judys.
It must've just been an off night based on many here praising it still. Will definitely try again.

I enjoyed this post; I've had many great meals at Impastat's over the years. One issue I have is that you say the Soft Shell Crab is too much food for you. Aren't you the same person who claimed to eat over 70oz of steak at GC? And other sides? Hope you and Mother enjoy the game tonight.

Mr Joe is great, but that isnt even the best Italian place in Metry much less Greater New Orleans

For some reason steak doesn’t fill me up. Bread, pasta, and fried coating do. I often eat three of those large rolls at Impastato’s and that adds to my satiety. I can finish the two soft shells, but it usually makes me feel too full.

Thank you for the beautiful write up. I’ll be going here for the first time in March. Looking forward to it.

Am I the only person who feels like Impastato's exists in some sort of weird, circa 1975-1985 time bubble? Decor, food, old guy who sings, people in the lounge: the whole thing is a set piece from when Fat City was an "entertainment district" rather than a sea of cheap apartments.
Have been to any number of special events/private parties, and I always leave with the same impression: did I just fall through a wormhole in time?
