Free stuff works in theory.

In reality, free stuff becomes lowest common denominator and not useful.

When the state pays for education it evolves to indoctrination.

We should pay for the schooling of our own kids beyond eighth grade.

By then, the people with academic interest and potential continue. Others can apprentice or go to vocational school.

But what about useful degrees?

Start with identifying the useless ones and eliminate them first?
While that is going on, track the students who graduated with the "useful" degrees and see how many actually got jobs in those fields.

Devil's Advocate: why shouldn't education be free - especially since most white collar jobs require a 4-year degree?

Not sure where you get that idea but most white collar jobs do not require a 4 year degree.

He must have taken some of those useless classes.
A poster boy for making the point that college can make you really dumb.

I know. It’s the government’s fault. That doesn’t change what I’m saying.

Somehow we've managed to sustain the free K-12 system for nearly a century.

What, you think all those teachers, administrators, coaches, janitors, etc., work for nothing?

That’s something you dolts just can’t seem to get thru your thick skills: IT’S NOT FREE just because YOU don’t see the cost. SOMEBODY is paying for it.

I guess I've seen it, but it never really registered to me before or I just haven't paid it much attention.

Anyone that has paid attention to the cost of the K-12 education system would not be advocating for a “free” higher education system. We have multi million tax payer funded athletic facilities that do nothing for the fundamental education of these students and only benefits the top .01% of athletes in the end. My tax bill is $6,500 a year and something like $5,500 of it is the local school district. The money does not make its way to classrooms.

The cord has to be cut at some point. A high school education seems to be the proper point to do this. I didn’t have a lot coming out of high school. Moved out at 19, paid my own rent, worked three jobs, went to school on my own dime at a community college at a very affordable rate, transferred to an accredited college and came out of school with no debt. This was all during the market crash of 2008. It can be done. And you can make a good wage coming out of college if you make smart decisions including your degree discipline.

The idea that college is not an option for those without free funding is nothing but an excuse for those who want to do nothing but make excuses. Cut the excuses and find a way to make it happen.

I don’t think these two know what free means. They’re not free at all.
