The biggest deer I’ve ever seen , rack and body were in Three Rivers and Red River back in the eighties. It was a grind for us to get back there. The deer were huge though. Really miss those days .

I was told by the same biologist hunting, game and timber mgt aren’t the only priorities on state LDWF lands.

That's why there are so many other options on those self-clearing permits. Alexander State Forest has the Red-cockaded woodpecker on it. Lake Ramsay Savannah has the gopher tortoise. They have to consider non-game species just as much as game.

The shite part is, better habitat management would benefit all of them.

I'm not at all surprised that those funds from timber sales go to the general fund and not LDWF. I mean, why in the hell would Louisiana do something that makes sense? That's not our style. Ridiculous.

Wonder if we could get a statewide effort going to get a ballot item to change that and make those funds go to LDWF.

The funniest thing about this whole thread is the complaints. It seems like everybody wants some country club game preserve.

It should be managed as a healthy forest to benefit the whole ecosystem. Its for the enjoyment of the outdoors not just deer. If people want to hike, birdwatch, fish, camp and what ever else people want to do outdoors.
Public land is about the only place a person can small game hunt and run a bird dog these days. Also there is too much easy access on a lot of wma’s. The less pressured hard to reach areas the better. The best public spots I ever hunted involved having to winch in and out.

You disparage everyone but this is the one thing everyone has agreed upon. The land isn't managed well at all.

The term “ managed “ can mean a lot of different things. It seems like most people in this thread refer to “ managed “ as in like a hunting club with restrictions on mostly antler size. Most people only know management like they see on realtree tv or something.

I see reading comprehension isn't your strong suit.

Maybe I missed it, but did anyone ever mention antler restrictions?

You actually make a valid point. Manipulating land/vegetation may be good for some animals and bad for others. Deer, turkeys, squirrel, rabbits, woodcock, quail, etc don't all thrive in the same habitat.

And managing for timber harvest is a completely different argument.

I have done out of state hunts, on public land, the last 2 years and have really enjoyed them. Next year I want to dedicate a week to hunting a WMA in Louisiana. Where would my efforts be best spent?

I would prefer bow hunting just to limit the pressure around me but I am not opposed to a gun hunt.

Ignoring all the hoopla on this thread, here are the public lands that you will most likely have success on without any history on the property:

1. Bayou Macon
2. Boeuf
3. Tensas N.W.R.
4. Loggy Bayou

Most of the others are grossly over pressured.

Kisatchie National Forest Ranger District is great as well but the area is huge.

Since I posted earlier not pertaining to the original topic. I’ll make my contribution.

If I was going to spend a week hunting and camping someplace in Louisiana. I would pick Tunica Hills WMA it ruff terrain, but a beautiful place.
