In terms of talent, where would this defense rank? Top 10? Top 15 at least right? They are ranked 44th in scoring defense in the nation. The only explainable reason for the large gap is coaching. This is not a fire Aranda post, but he definitely deserves criticism and if he doesn't start turning it around, the heat will get turned up.

Just for reference, the other 3 teams in the CFP top 4 rank in scoring defense:
Ohio St - 1st in Scoring Defense - 9.8 ppg
Clemson - 3rd in Scoring Defense - 10.7 ppg
Georgia - 2nd in Scoring Defense - 10.5 ppg
LSU - 44th in scoring Defense - 23.8 ppg gross

Ohio state and Clemson play offensive juggernauts each week.

I'm as thrilled about that as anyone, but this defense has coaching issues. I hope he turns is around.

In Aranda's defense, some of this is on the players. He can call the right defense but if the players aren't reading their keys, doing their jobs, and tackling.. it's going to look like shite.

I feel like he can't possibly be this bad at making adjustments and calling defenses - I think quite a bit of this is on the players.

Ohio St - 1st in Scoring Defense - 9.8 ppg
Clemson - 3rd in Scoring Defense - 10.7 ppg

I wonder where LSU would be ranked against either of those schedules?

Every year every game? Defense has gotten worse each year since he’s been here

Everything you just said there is coaching. They are coached to read their keys, coached to do their jobs, coached to tackle, etc. The message isn't getting through. We have 4 and 5 stars littered all over our defense. They aren't being coached right for whatever reason.

Only issue is that you disagree with his coaching philosophy.

Clearly he and O have decided to play bend, don’t break and keep everything in front of you. With this O and the inexperience on D (including a weak line), why not do that? I would play the odds too if I were them.

Their job is to win games, not play lights out D that exposes the D and puts them under a ton of pressure.

But I’m sure YOU know better than professional coaches.

We have talent on the DL. It's all scheme. They play a style that makes them look bad. That is the DA style...DL eat blocks and lbs make plays. DA could help with some blitzes on pass plays and for that matter to stuff some run plays. Had we had guys filling the holes last week some of those runs never happen.

I’m not concerned at all about the defense. 10-0 and pretty much led every game by at least 2 scores for almost the entire game.

Enjoy the greatest season in LSU football history.

At this level tackling is not on coaching imo. These kids know how to tackle. Half the time they're too worried about standing the guy up and stripping the ball or making a highlight hit and not wrapping up. I do think that Delpit is not 100% though because on one of Plumlee's runs Delpit just straight up missed him. A play he makes if he's 100%.

I call bullshite.

K'Lavon Chaisson - 4* 0.9821
Tyler Shelvin - 4* 0.9754
Rashard Lawerence - 5* 0.9847
Glen Logan - 4* 0.9318

Talent is not an issue.

How is it coaching when it’s the personnel that’s changed and not the coach? We have 6/7 starters injured, playing hurt or not even on the team anymore. The discrepancy in yards per play from 2017 to this year is the same between 2016 and 2017 yet nobody noticed back then, why is that? It’s because of the big plays, we give up big plays in the run game because we’re a very slow defense. Our LBs are average at best and 3 or 4 secondary players can’t run because of injury. And we can’t replace those guys because there’s no depth. Joseph, Divinity, Thomas, Harris were all starters and rotation guys and are all gone. We give up big plays in the passing game because we have no pass rushers. The team leaders in sacks last season were Divinity and Delpit, we also had Anthony who flashed at times. Divinity is gone Anthony doesn’t play, Delpit is playing center field so we can’t use him to blitz like we used to. Take any LSU defense then take away their top 4-5 pass rushers and ask yourself what that would look like. Aranda didn’t forget how to coach.
