re: Jaxson Hayes...He is starting to become more comfortable in the system

Here are highlights from last night. The first play might be the most impressive even though it doesn't show his crazy length and leaping ablility. He had his back turned to Redick, I'm not even sure he sees the ball coming, then all of a sudden his WR instincts kick in and he makes a nice one handed catch which he immediately turns into a dribble and layup in traffic.

We are better with him in the game, plain and simple.
The only way for him to get better at the things he needs to get better at are by playing NBA minutes and critiquing the film after. Simple things like not drawing charges on offense, setting good picks, knowing when to go after a block and when not to, and the biggest would be defending effectively without fouling.
one of the things i notice with him defensively is he doesn't block out much at all, and when a shot is taken and he's not under the goal, he doesn't always get in the paint for the rebound, just kinda turns and watches. He needs to get more aggressive on the defensive rebounding front.

I agree and I thought he was going to spend most of the year in the GLeague but I was way wrong. The quicker he gets up to speed the better the Pels will be.

Same, I stated multiple times on the podcast I wanted him in the G league and I am glad I was wrong.
He does foul A TON, but that will get better with playing time. Having a rim protector and a guy that can finish on the rim and create so much havoc on offense and defense is such a plus for this team. The pick and roll game with him and Zion could be unstoppable with shooters on the perimeter. Oh and he is only 19....![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconbanana1.gif)

Count me in this number. Hayes and NAW have shown flashes that they will have long and productive NBA careers sooner than I expected. If Zion is who we think he is and Didi is able to produce anything like he is in Australia we may be looking at one of the all-time great drafts in NBA history. The future of this organization is very, very bright. I just wish the casuals could see beyond the current W/L record and start supporting the team.

Four players are currently touting averages of at least 16.5 PPG, 8 RPG, 1.5 BPG and 1.5 SPG per 36 minutes:
Giannis Antetokounmpo
Karl-Anthony Towns
Andre Drummond
Jaxson Hayes

That's awesome, and he really doesn't have much of a clue how to play basketball yet.
Once he does, he could be really good.

This is the scary (good way) part.
You can see JJ instructing him in-game and that's worth JJ's contract alone.
Will be interesting times when the lineup becomes:
Zo
NAW
BI
Zion
Hayes
in a few years.
I did a little digging around the Warrior's rise to power and oddly enough our team has similar traits or occurances.
#1 beloved coach that probably can't get the team over the hump (Mark Jackson/Uncle Al)
#2 Early draft pick thats on the rise (BI)
#3 Small signs of a core/bench beginning to take shape (Hayes/NAW/Jackson/Okafor)
The things that differ are that we have a transcendent player (Zion) that still hasn't played a regular-season game. But he will more than likely assume the role as the leader or at worse, BI's wingman.
With Zo only needing to be the facilitator he will more than likely command mid tier player contract.

The change is night and day comparing how he's played the last 2 games to his earlier games.
Of those 3 I remember at least 2 that were made only because you could tell Jaxson was holding back to avoid fouls. Once he gets a better handle on when to wait and when to attack he's going to be a problem for the rest of the league on defense.

Opponents were 13/14 against Jaxson Hayes at the rim in the first 4 games.
They have gone 3/11 since.

the dude is 19, and was not drafted to be an immediate rotation player. given the spate of injuries, maybe a wing would have been a better short-term choice, but all in all i think the pels have to be thrilled that he is anything other than a massive liability at the moment

It was like he didn't realize how tall he is. He would keep throwing both arms forward when he could get blocks/force misses by leaving them straight up.
I know that Oak has had some good games with us, but I'd prefer Hayes get more playing time than he does when the team is healthy (LOL).
For the 5, something like:
Favors: 24mpg
Hayes: 15mpg
Zion: 5mpg
Oak: 4mpg

I might sound crazy but he kind of reminds me of AD when we drafted him super long and athletic shot blocker who also finishes well around the rim both had decent looking shots he just had to gain one weight and more reps with his jumpshot and dude can turn into an all star

Well he hasn't fallen down on an alley oop yet and went into the locker room mid game to x-ray his bo bo, so he does not remind me of that vagina at all.

It's funny 'cause it's true.

That’s expected due to his growth spurt. It’s going to some time before he realizes he just needs to keep his arms straight in the air and that will affect most shots. The more playing time he gets, the faster he learns. The progression has been good. He’s showing rapid improvement every game he’s played so far. Very coachable player. We’re definitely need his presence on the court. He keeps the lanes open with his threat rolling to the basket.

Yeah, the thing that impressed me most about yesterday was that he only had two personal fouls.
At the beginning of the season, if you'd told me that, because of injuries, Hayes would play 31 minutes in a game, and that he'd have a double-double and 3 blocks, I'd have believed you. If you told me that Hayes would do all that and only commit two fouls, I'd have laughed.
All through the summer league and preseason, Hayes was a fouling machine. Even after the first six or so games, I looked at the stats and Hayes was #2 in the NBA in fouls per minute.
I missed the first quarter last night, but all I saw of Jaxson was amazing. He was altering a lot of shots. Next season, after an offseason of putting on good weight, Hayes will be a outstanding starting center for us.

I became a Pelican fan because Zion is my favourite player ever but this kid is giving me goosebumps. He has insane athleticism at his size. So fun to watch. I expect a bright future from him.
Also he is a true gentleman off the court. Hard not to cheer for him.

Explain to me the genius that is alvin gentry's offensive style
Posted on 11/18/19 at 10:22 pm to WhiteMandingo
ive had a few convos and what I've heard is that his "genius," if you want to call it that, allows players to be themselves. there is obviously some structure, like set plays for JJ, the general concept to drive to the basket to get help defenders moving, and the general rule to be aggressive when you're open. but outside of that, like JJ said, it's very free flowing
so first, it forces everyone to stay involved & aggressive. more importantly, it attempts to "unlock" talented players that have a mature game/know what they are good at/decisive with the basketball (ie Jrue, BI, I think NAW too). it's the kind of offense that gifted players like Steph Curry thrive in and a big reason why BI is looking like a better player in Nola than LA
however, it's also the offense that is less than ideal for players that are still figuring out how they impact the game or are indecisive or need more structure (ie Lonzo).
