My "Make Every Game Count" proposal for CFB Playoffs

Expand the playoff field to 6 teams.
The P5 conference championship games provide an automatic bid. There remains 1 "at large" spot. Theoretically, a non-P5 school could compete for that spot if undefeated and more impressive than all the P5 non-champions.
The P5 champs ranked 1 and 2 by the playoff committee get first round byes - the P5 championship games function as unofficial playoffs.
Therefore - a team would be best served by winning every game and their conference championship game.
It will be a dogfight between 1-loss P5 runner ups, but the message here is - every game counts.
Could be done with 8 and 3 at large spots, which would greatly increase the chances of a non-P5 team with a great year sneaking in, but I would suspect in a typical year, most slots would be P5 champs and runners up, even with 8. But, then, no first round byes - and both advancing teams would always play 3 additional games (quarters, semis, finals).
So, I like the 6 more than the 8, despite the weaknesses (teams will always be left out, even if you expanded to 12, 16, etc., and each tier adds more games for the eventual winners - tough to do with 18 to 22 year old kids).

My only problem with 6 is you have a committee deciding who gets byes. Not a fan of that. It has to go to 8 if/when it expands.

I get that, but the committee decides who PLAYS now, which is worse, IMHO.

Well if you’re still using a committee to determine the best 6, then shouldn’t the top two get a bye? They’re considered the top two teams in the country.

That's true but really 3 of the 4 teams are basically all agreed upon each year. The fourth team usually has some controversy.
In your scenario, 5 of the 6 would be locked in and there would still be a committee selecting the 6th.
The byes are just too big of an advantage IMO. That's my only issue with 6.

8 teams
P5 champs and 3 At- Large

Swap the committee for BCS computers and keep the rest of the format intact and I’m 100% on board.

You don't have to win every game to be a conference champion. If AL wins our game, the Iron Bowl could be pretty meaningless as far as the playoffs go. In 2001, LSU could have theoretically been 6-6 and be in the playoffs. The only way to make EVERY game count is to use a BCS like system.

That's why I liked my 6 plus 2 first round byes - that means you have to try to win the Iron Bowl - drop to 3rd, no first round bye.

already allow too many teams to truly say that.
as proof, there are already multiple articles written and radio/tv hosts saying “Bama doesn’t even have to play their starting QB against LSU, because they’re in even with a loss”
that’s before the game even gets played they’re calling it irrelevant.

Leave it exactly the way it is now.
If we HAVE to change it, make 4 big super conferences, each with a Conference Title game, and have the 4 Conference champs have a playoff.

The easy fix is to bring back the BCS model and just apply it to the playoff rankings.
No one ever thought the BCS was ever off by more than a spot for any team, they just didn't like only 2 teams getting a chance to play for the trophy.

Since there were 4 BCS bowls I say there should be 8 playoff teams. Then just like the BCS bowls guaranteed the 5 P5 champs and the 3 At-Large bids.

That could work. Good luck breaking up the committee though. Once things like that are formed, they hardly ever disband.

Giving an automatic bid to a P5 conference champion is a horrible idea. So what happens when an 7-5 Pitt pulls off an upset and knocks off Clemson in a conference championship game.

The G5 teams either need to get a shot or they should be kicked to FCS.

Same things that happens when a 7-9 Seahawks team wins the NFC West in the NFL. They get in over the 10-6 Giants and the 10-6 Buccaneers.
That's why OP called it the "every game counts" scenario.

yeah, every game except those 5.
they didn’t count.
giving an auto bid no longer rewards the best complete season. it now rewards the best game on that one Saturday in early December.
who was best From Aug/Sep through November becomes completely irrelevant.
which is literally the exact opposite of “every game counts”

Clemson hopes for an at-large spot. They should have taken care of business. What if Pitt was without a few key players for the first 5 games. Started the season 0-5, then won the last 7 games to get into the conference championship game?
I would like to see 8 conferences with 12 teams each. That's 96 teams. Each conference has a championship game, and winner of the championship game makes the playoffs.
