Grrrl, I just watched your video again and it made me wonder about something.
I realize he was only a year old and wasn’t talking much if at all when you brought him home but your son went from an all Russian speaking environment....only hearing Russian words, to hearing only English spoken.
Did he seem frustrated or surprised by the sudden drastic change in what he heard people in his life speaking?
I ask because in a couple of the photos where it looks like you’re talking to him, he looks really big-eyed like he’s trying to figure out what the strange sounds he was hearing meant.
Eta: The music background to go along with the video was just perfect.

Wonderful story!
What made yall want to adopt from Russia instead of the US? I don’t know anything about the adoption process but I am surprised to see the number of people traveling abroad. I was incredibly disheartened to read about how expensive it can be.

I'm just a Dawg that heard about TD because of the Poli board about 7 years ago. Checked it out and got hooked. There's definitely a special group of people here, and this video proves it.
Thank you for sharing.

Great story. It's amazing to know that even as silly and ruthless a place TigerDroppings can be, it's still capable of doing some good.

We met our son at 10.5 months old and on 10/17/2007, 1 week after his 1st birthday, the court declared us his parents. That infant turned 13 last week and today we celebrate the 12th anniversary of our adoption!
If your posts are any indication, that little boy has a wonderful mother and a good example of what women should be.
Congrats to you and your family! May y'all have many more years of warm joy together.

He has always been incredibly intelligent and quick. He would make eye contact whenever we spoke to him and you could see the wheels turning. For about 6 months, he spoke very few words. “That”, “Cat”, “Mama”, “Dada” and “Touchdown” (I mean, it was 2007 LSU football season!) He pretty much got all his needs met with those words.
I “retired” to stay home to help get him caught up physically and developmentally and I was very planned in my approach. (Great help from our social worker and my experience in employee training/methods of learning) After about 6 months, he began speaking in almost complete sentences. He had an early recognition of sarcasm and nuance that isn’t normally seen until much later. We attribute that to always speaking in complete sentences to him, repeating those sentences while pointing out objects we were discussing and his natural tendency to be a student. He observes and processes things until he understands then jumps right in at a higher level.
Once he decided he understood English, he astonished us with his quick wit and ability to process. The strategic working of his brain has been something amazing to witness over the years!

Thanks for answering my question. He really is intently studying you in those photos I’m referring to. You can see the wheels turning in his head.

We had no parenting experience and decided we wanted to take on as few additional challenges as possible.
Foreign vs domestic adoption is such a personal decision. For us, we were emotionally in a place that we wanted a “sure thing.” I couldn’t handle additional disappointments if the birth mother changed her mind or the birth family challenged the adoption.
Also, I wanted a Caucasian child for 2 reason: 1) I didn’t want it to be obvious to strangers that my child was adopted and wanted it to always be his choice if people knew his birth story or not. 2) Nit knowing what challenges we would confront parenting an adopted child, I wasn’t sure we could also successfully navigate the additional emotional and cultural challenges that come with parenting an interracial child.
Now that I feel we have some experience with parenting an adopted child, I would eagerly adopt interracially. (I wanted to but it was years later and the hubs felt we waited too long to start again.) I feel we’ve done a good job of connecting and addressing the emotional needs of our child and could do the same for another child with or without additional obstacles. It’s all about communication and asking help from others who have been there when you are unsure.
