In 2007, my husband and I traveled to Russia 3 times as part of our independent adoption of our son. Our adoption was independent due the the escalating tensions between the US and Russia and took place during the first closure of Russian adoptions through US adoption agencies. Shortly, we were on our own.

In this walk of Faith, God sent us many people along the way whenever we were confronted with things unfamiliar and terrifying. Part of this miracle is that our adoption was completed, start to finish, in only 7 months!

This extremely expedited timeline meant we were given very short notice of travel all 3 trips leaving us little to no time to research locations, customs and processes. I can easily say that standing in court before a Russian judge and a Panel of 3 attorneys to argue, personally, our case for our adoption of our son was the most intimidating and terrifying experience of my life! Emotional and frightened, I could only pray God gave me the words.

A week before our first trip, the same day we were given our date of travel, I reached out on TD searching for someone who was familiar with Russia to answer questions and provide insight. Someone saw my post and “paged” LSURussian to my thread. He immediately responded answering all my questions and providing additional tips. He continued to offer info and support through our next 2 trips and was a real source of comfort and support, even giving tips on where to watch the LSU game while we were there.

We met our son at 10.5 months old and on 10/17/2007, 1 week after his 1st birthday, the court declared us his parents. That infant turned 13 last week and today we celebrate the 12th anniversary of our adoption!

So Russian, here is my annual toast to you. You helped change our lives forever and I am so thankful you took so much time to help me feel more informed and prepared for our trips to that strange, new culture. You say you did little but you were just some stranger on a sports board who didn’t have to do anything at all.

So, thank you. This year, I will share the short video we created for our adoption in 2007 showing pics and thanking everyone who gave us support.

Adoption is such a wonderful thing. There are only blessed people in the process. Such a wonderful video and story. Thanks for sharing.

My wife of 30 years was adopted. We recently learned through ancestry her story. It was better than expected. Her bio parents were college students who later married and had another daughter. My wife and her sister are building the most awesome relationship. My wife had only brothers in her family so the relationship is very unique.

Thank you again for sharing.

I’ve never shared before because of how personal it is but really wanted Russian to see our experience. Also wanted all of you to see how so much good can come from people on this board reaching out and sharing thoughts. We disagree on much but the respect and sharing here really can make a difference.

Let this thread be proof that at least once, somehow, in some way, LSURussian satisfied a woman.

Great story! At the time we started to adopt in 2004, the Russians had clamped down on it and made it extremely difficult for foreigners, especially Americans, to adopt and take an infant out of the country.

So, in 2005, we settled on adopting from out of China, and signed with an agency in Austin.

3 days after sending them $4000 for our initial deposit, I was at a defense industry conference in San Diego. My wife called, said she had some news and I should probably sit down for it.

Shocked, I sat down and thought immediately that is was terrible news. What she told me changed our lives, as she had gone to her doctor the day before I left and taken blood and urine tests for what she thought might be a health issue. I was sitting there thinking she was called to tell me she had received a prognosis of dire medical condition. The doctor had called her to give her the results.

Turned out she was carrying our child, my son, who is now 13 years old. It was like a bolt of lightening had struck, I was so shocked. We had tried for five years and had all sorts of treatments, fertilization efforts and it was just rejection after rejection after rejection.

We decided not to continue with the adoption process, as the pregnancy was precarious to begin with (he was born seven weeks premature) but looking back, wish we'd continued with it and had two boys to be together.

Tip of the hat to you and yours and for taking another into your lives.
