Amen. First answering machine messages were like: "This is John Doe with Acme, Inc. I am not available at this time. Please leave a message I will return your call within 24-48 hours. Have a great day."

Here's how you'd google something. My grandparents still have theirs in pristine condition. Honestly, when was the last time you've seen someone - anywhere - pull out one of these?

Still a smart way to research. Can't use the article as a resource, but the article bibliography is a great way to start. Use the same sources the author of the article did, and go from those.

Pagers.
You passed notes in school.
People would call your house between 4-8 looking for you
People would just show up at your house.
Kids would go through the neighborhood and see where the bikes were parked.

talked to old State Trooper one day, they didn’t even had radios in their cop cars in his day.He said he went on patrol with roll of nickels, stopped every hour at pay phone.Would call headquarters to see if there were any wrecks he needed to respond to.Hard to imagine.

When did he work? Police radio was invented in the 20's

I remember the TripTik. That and having a Thomas Guide in my car.

You made plans and stuck to them. If you were late, you got left behind and figured it out. Good times.

We moved to Virginia in the mid 70s. My dad went to Auburn, and If you missed the Prudential College Scoreboard show with Dave Diles you wouldn’t know the Auburn score until you got the paper Sunday morning.

That reminds me of a conversation I had recently with a younger co-worker about fantasy football. The first few years I did fantasy football was in the mid-90's where are the scoring was done by hand. We usually didn't have final results until Tuesday afternoon. We would sometimes have results on Monday afternoon pending the outcome of the Monday night game. Also had to fax our lineups to the commissioner of the league by lunchtime on Thursday, and they couldn't be changed after that.

If you happened to catch SporsCenter on Sunday night, you usually had a general idea how you did that week, but it wasn't always accurate.

Kinda weird to think about now.

He was apparently an intimidating figure as I had several people say to avoid him and his floor of the main building on the HI-HC campus. My response was always along the lines of no intention to get in his way but would be prompt if needed for something. Those multi millionaires like him at the top of the corporate chain make more than a low level employees annual salary in the time it takes to ask them a question and the time to state a response is another low level salary worth.

I still marvel at our parents doing vacations without the internet

People were way more resourceful before the internet. It was called "thinking critically" and "problem solving." Lost? Ask directions. Car broke down? Hitch hike. Life was a lot more adventurous, you really couldn't take much for granted. Everything nowadays is like being on autopilot. How to get some place? Google maps. Where to eat? Yelp. Things were way more fun when you didn't really know what was going to happen

We also

Drank hose water
Took rides in the back of truck
Didn’t wear helmets to ride bikes
Respected our parents, teachers, the President, the flag and God
Didn’t cry all the time
Ate square pizza and corn at school

And most importantly looked between our legs to tell us which bathroom to use. Something hanging down you’re a male and you go to the men’s room and like girls

It was pretty simple

Pay phones. It sucked when they went from a quarter to 35 cents

I remember when they were only a dime to make a local call. Bus fare was about the same IIRC.

One of my aunts had a phone that was a "Party Line" that she shared with a neighbor across the street. You'd pick up the phone to make a call and you'd hear the neighbor talking and you'd have to wait for them to get off the phone to make your call. It got bad when the neighbor's daughter got into her teens.

Regular and pay phones. Some of us got a Technician level Ham license and made an occasional phone call through the local repeater. Catch. .... ham license restrictions regulated what the call could be about and everyone with a ham radio on that frequency could listen in on your conversation.

Mostly, we talked face to face.

Pay phones or regular phones. You haven’t lived till you use a pay phone. Nothing like picking up a greasy pay phone at some random gas station in the hood to call your office.

Or to shoot someone in front of a TV camera and hanging it up before the cop got you. :)
