If China cut off the NBA it was going to cause a 15% or more decrease in the NBA salary cap. That's kind of a big deal to the league.

I can tell just by the simple arrogance obvious the periods that this story is either from NY Times or Washington Post. No one else is that smug. It's the same reason they write Mr. Smith instead of just Smith in a story when AP news style that virtually every other publication follows does the latter.

Basically, everyone will be a hypocrite if the stakes are high enough. On both sides of the political aisle.

Ryen Russillo has a great take on his podcast. Level headed and pragmatic take.

This is correct. And I think that while many younger Chinese love the NBA and many parts of American culture, many are also very sensitive about criticism of their government from outsiders.

It doesn't mean the Chinese have any right to be upset. Its no different than Imams stirring riots because someone in France drew a cartoon of Mohammed. We should not back down from doing the right thing, but we need to not be shocked if they try to come after us.

The only reason I would ever do this is if they were playing the Spurs in the WCF and I happened to be traveling on the other side of the world

The fact that the NBA showed even some deference to the commie Chinese government shows two things

1. The nba is an anti America cowardly organization that values profit over righteousness

2. China’s power is influencing American culture in ways unimaginable just a decade ago

And that is why it is interesting to see so many MSB posters point their fingers and get on their high horse because it has become a "gotcha" moment for them.

Did really expect the league to say screw China and piss away hundreds of millions of dollars?

I don't think anyone (well, the majority at least) has/had any such expectation. This mainly turned into a blasting of the NBA for giving a thumbs up to players, coaches, etc for having political positions and being very vocal about it in the past when it would get them a pat on the back in the media.

Now, we have China in a human rights abuse being openly discussed, NBA GM makes a comment, and the NBA comes down on his head.

It's the hypocrisy combined with the detail of communist China being a modern day USSR/Nazi Germany that has people up in arms, but especially the hypocrisy.

ETA: If the NBA stayed out of politics from day 1, this is nearly a non-issue most likely as they have the position of consistency.

Yep the most hateful and unhappy people I know are the extremist on either side. They have let CNN and Fox News warp their mind.

I totally get that but

Everyone has a price. If any of the American political issues that certain players and coaches chimed in on would have cost the NBA tons of money, we would have seen a totally different take in those matters from the league.

That makes them no less of hypocrites.

I understand that point, but this needs to be thrown back in their face every time they make a political statement.

?? You're making it sound like they shouldn't get shite on for being hypocrites in this just because other people may sell out. We can sit here and say, 'Everyone has a price,' but until I see them actually in said scenario, I can't exactly know 100% for sure how they'll react. I can guess, and probably accurately, but at the end of the day, we're guessing. The NBA was put in the position and made an arse of themselves as being sell out hypocrites. Hence, they're getting blasted for it. That's all there is to it.
