Weird history on that front-
Larry Hagman (JR Ewing) was a national hero in Romania due to a mistake by the ruling family, the Ceaucescus.
To explain, communist Romania started broadcasting Dallas in the 1980s because they wanted to use it as an example of how decadent and corrupt westerners were.
It failed because even the poor people on that show had stuff rich people in Romania would kill for, helping contribute to the revolution at the end of the 80s that saw the Ceaucescus executed.
In China’s case, NBA fandom and the Rockets are so conflated thanks to Yao that disappearing them overnight can’t help but be noticed and questioned.

I still remember exactly where I was when it first registered to me that this newspaper was doing the shite on purpose. Washington, D.C. 2002. Was up there competing in the National Spelling Bee. Picked up a paper, trying to read about the Kings/lakers WCF (wipe that silly grin off your face RIGHT now, you little slut ), and I'm like "why tf would anyone spell it like that?" shite has bothered me ever since

Doubtful. More likely it's that Chinese people got pissed that their favorite team all the sudden got banned.
The Chinese government doesn't give a shite about that.

The problem China has is they are focused on being a power on the world stage.
They can control the narrative and create an echo chamber of agreement at home, but their B.S. is quickly exposed on the world stage.
Most authoritarian regimes are much more insular than China.

There may not be something tied to sports in my entire lifetime that I had cared less about than this China in the NBA nonsense. And I’m not sure why everyone here keeps posting about it.

But this effects nothing here. Absolutely nothing.

China has been more aggressive about throwing its weight around because American companies have been backing down.
The way to defeat bullies is to stand up to them, not to cave in.

Except it directly affects the NBA (perhaps should clarify to say that it had/has extreme potential to affect the NBA beyond what this has already), which affects a significant sport in American entertainment.
Granted, part of this is further focused on due to Blizzard straight up bending the knee to China in the last few days, and thus the focus on the topic as a whole has been amplified.

You dont see how a potentially large decrease in projected league revenues might have an impact on the league?

If the cap goes down by 15%, it means teams with large contracts in the books could be liable for a lot of luxury tax payments while other teams may not be able to make a significant offer on FAs due to a lack of available cap space.
In the case of a team like the Lakers, they would pretty much be stuck with a lineup consisting of AD, LeBron, and 13 scrubs because they couldn’t pay anyone else and have no draft picks of note to trade.

I refuse to believe these men have never seen the infamous 1989 Tiananmen Square Tank Man photo or that they do not know its backstory. I refuse to believe that they have not by now performed at least a cursory Google search explaining the Hong Kong protests. I refuse to believe that they have not at least heard of the recent South Park episode that got the satirical television show banned in China.
