Where are we playing? At Oakbourne play it down. At squirrel run we play it up.

Play it down unless the group says otherwise before teeing off.

Up in fairway, down in rough if fairways have any issues at all.

I'm playing it down unless I'm by myself, then the round always turns into a practice round

A very fair way to play a course when the conditions are not good is to allow a drop in the fairway cut if the lie is not good. No roaching the ball with your clubhead - just a drop on the spot the ball is at if the lie is terrible. This does not guarantee a perfect lie, but eliminates divots, bare areas or bad cuts on the fairways. Once we started playing this rule, it was amazing how little the ball was moved/dropped. In the rough we use it in the winter or as a "root rule".

Your game will improve if you walk and play it as it lies

Down. Bad lies happen. When you get in a tourney and have to play it down, you are used to it. Also, if you keep a handicap and use it for betting or tournaments, you are hurting yourself.

We play the ball as it lies everywhere on typical day
If carts are on path we play is down everywhere except fairway and mark, clean and replace
Not scorecard or club length unless casual water is in play

Similar to what PGA tour does

USGA events are much more strict than the PGA

For a group of buddies enjoying the game there is nothing wrong with bumping and moving the ball around as long as you know that this type of golf is not acceptable in tournaments
